when you are saying you are getting a new modem what do you mean?

If it is replacement from ntl for a Stand Alone Modem then the technician who installs it will have it replaced on your account so it will work straight away.

If it is a replacement Set Top Box, you will have to provision your computer again.

In a nutshell - no.

All modems are the property of NTL so if you buy one you wont be able to register it so why bother as if you are a customer you already pay to rent one.

No - all cable modems remain NTL property. Trading them is a form of handling stolen goods.

Why do you want a new one, anyway?

Yep as the others have said, if you buy one off ebay or anywhere else, it will not work. It has to come directly from NTL so that they can register it to your account first.

Manual Auto-Registration procedure

In order to complete the registration of your cable modem or set top box, and to register for ntlworld username and ISP services, make sure that your PC is using your cable modem connection (not dial-up), then launch your web browser, which must have JavaScript enabled. If your web-browser hangs or gives an error page when launched, this might be because it is trying to connect to a home page which is disallowed until you have completed this registration: just click Stop. Send your web browser to https://autoreg.autoregister.net/start.html (note the https rather than http) and follow the on-screen instructions. When asked for a Serial Number:

for stand-alone cable modem users, the serial number is ntl-ct8-cb485.
for digital TV set top box users, the serial number is ntl-ct8-cb487.
There will be a long pause while the registration system verifies the identity of your cable modem: if this never finishes, this might be because your browser does not have JavaScript enabled. You are then asked for other data from your Welcome letter (be sure to maintain the correct upper-case and lower-case distinction). Then follow the on-screen instructions.

After successful online registration, it is then necessary to power the cable modem off and on again (do not mistake the SB4100 front standby button for a power button) to load the proper configuration file (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/cmfile.html#cmfile) and obtain the intended class of service, and then re-boot your PC. You will know when you get a final configuration when your PC gets given an IP address outside the temporary ranges (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/badip.html#ntltempip). Surfboard users can check the class of service they have obtained by viewing the cable modem log (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/signal.html#cmlog) after the re-boot.

Think you better check you info there stealth the SACM serial number is actually ntl-ct8-cj486. Also turn auto complete off when asked (usually when entering the surname and PIN.

You can access the reg site by the IP as well which is 80.5.178.26 :)

No I think you better:

Registration within the Broadband Installer CD-ROM

Normally, the registration for ntlworld ISP services is performed within the Broadband Installation procedure on the CD-ROM. The registration procedure starts with quoting a serial number:

for stand-alone cable modem users, the serial number is ntl-ct8-cj486.
for digital TV set top box users, the serial number is ntl-ct8-cb487.
You are then prompted for the other data from your Welcome letter. If at this stage, the registration fails to complete (e.g. because of failures within the network or registration servers), you need to return later to complete the registration manually, as below. In the meantime, you will not be able to access any part of the internet apart from the registration server URL given below. If it is inaccessible, keep trying until it is working.

Too right when you have been doing this job for 5 years from dialup to SACM and STB I think I know what I'm talking about. The idea is to keep it as simple as possible for customers because all they want to do is get on t'internet. The majority are not interested in config files or temp IP addresses they just want to mail their friends or shop online.

Darkcloud's original post was for a new modem maybe he'll be lucky and get one of the new 250's if he orders one from Sales. And you're right to advise him not to get an Ebay job!

The reg process on there is for a Motorola same process but having helped a neighbour to reg a 250 a couple of weeks ago there's no need to power down the modem just let the modem reboot when you see the onscreen prompt.

I came on here to help and if my experience in the job helps then I've got no problem doing my bit.
