Ok, I'm in the market for one of these, but which one?

We have the kiss players, like the look of the 500 series, but at £200 , a little pricey.

We also have the yamada (aka umax) 6100, interesting, divx 3,4,and 5, xvid and mp3 (oh, it can also do dvd) for £89.

anyone got one?

What they like?

please help.

please help. yep got the yamada 5500 as all these players use the same sigma designs chipset aka xcard the all have the same flaws most play xvid,DVD,(s)vcd and divx 4 & 5.x mp3 and wma perfectly they have poor 3.x support this barley plays if at all but as most erm..backups use divx5 or xvid these days this isn't a problem.
you may want to consider the Lite-On LVD-2001 this plays flash cards directly from the player:)

I only have experience of the kiss unit...

The 450 is pretty good, and software upgradeable...

Slightly more info on the 6100 here (http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/t/85884/ds.html)

All waiting for the new firmware to see if they fix the 'playing divX in a box' problem

Many thanks, not even heard of the Lite-On LVD-2001, will look intbit more, like if it plays xvid or only divx, and which versions - 3,4,5?

Looks interesting.

Went down the Yamada DVX 6100 route myself, you can read more HERE (http://dvx-6100.xtre.me.uk/)

There is a new site building HERE (http://dvx-6100.xtre.me.uk/) which whilst it currently concentrates on the Yamada players, one of its aims is to become a repository of knowledge on all the standalone DivX/Xvid players available

maybe you can pop along there too once you you've tried it out and let us know its good and bad points

bought the DVX 6100 a couple of weeks a ago excellent player, much better than the previous mpeg 4 players play everything 3.11 included, can 100% recommend the divx 6100, avoid the old players if u can
the elta that darant has bought uses the old sigma designs chipset so it has the same problems that that ALL of the 1st gen divx capable players had having had the yamada 5500 which is essential the same player i spent may a frustrating hour converting files so i was very happy to get a 6100.

Is it the hardware or the software thats no good? I know the firmware is upgradable via CD.

Depends on what u mean by no good, if u mean is it limited yes it's no good, the new 2nd gen players use a chipset by ess that is in imo far superior as it is more tolerant of errors and plays 3.11 plus there is from what i can tell a bigger margin for software upgrades, that being said the sigma chipset plays xvid & divx 4.x & 5.x very well i had no complaints about my old player in that.
