Hiya all,

For about 2 weeks I have been having connection drop-outs with my connection. I lose all internet connectivity when this happens and the "cable" light on my modem (terayon) goes out for about 3 or 4 seconds before coming back on flashing very fast which then turns back to a solid light. I still dont get internet access for a good 3 or 4 minutes later.

For example when this is happening I can ping www.bbc.co.uk and get multiple time-outs to the site untill my cable light becomes solid again and all is back to normal (apart from webpages loading very slow)
I have my docsdiag information below but some people have said it to be OK.

I also phoned TS about this issue which they said that it hasn't happend as they can't see anything wrong with my modem and that is must be a problem my end with my system. I don't run a firewall and my connection is though my server using advanced server 2003. I have shared the internet connection across my network. I was also getting this issue when I had the internet directly connected to my Gaming machine. Of course also when this happens and I am in CSS I get major lag because I lose everything.

Any help would be very much appreciated as I have phoned TS twice with this issue and they have not helped me saying its my end :( I have also checked all my connections in the house and can't find anything wrong with them.

Thanks for your time :)

Couple of questions then:

1. Have you checked for a Virus / Spyware etc?
2. Are you uploading much when this happens?
3. What other programs / processes are running on the machine when it happens?
4. Do you get the same problems if you connect directly to the Modem, rather than through the server?

5. Have you tried specifying a proxy rather than going through the standard proxy for your area?

Hiya :) thanks for the reply

1. Yes this is a fresh install about 2 weeks old. All checked and A ok
2. Nope - my connection can be basicly idle when i get the problem
3. Sometimes nothing. Other times I can be in a middle of a CS match
4. Yes I get the same issue directly connected to the internet though my gaming machine.

IIRC, the CM has a logfile. Have you tried the '-log' option of docsdiag to see if there is any relevant info in the logs. Either post part of the logs here (without IP's ;) ) or send to TS.

Full details on docsdiag at RDHW's site - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/docsdiag/

Right,

After some more investigation it seems I get this problem more at around 7:30 - 11pm. Drop-outs get worse inbetween these times for whatever reason. Which happens to be the time I play my CSS clan matches

Anyway if this don't get sorted out soon I WILL more to ADSL

I'm getting VERY annoyed now. TS have nothing to tell me apart from "Its your machine or network"

Yes of course it is - My network is cauing my "cable" light on my modem to go off  Yes its my network that is cauing random time-outs to www.bbc.co.uk as well!

sigh...

you have a week NTL...I mean it.

Why are you bothering?

You could get (uncapped) 4 Meg DSL from Bulldog for £39.99-which will also include the cost of your landline. :tu:

So that equates to 4 Meg for approx £29.99 + £10.00 or so for your phone line (which you pay anyway at the moment)

Now, I know we've already explored this (a bit).

But I seem to recall that if you max out your upstream (upload) connection for any length of time the network will cut of your downstream (download) connection for a while.

This is something to do with the network not being able to receive the receipt confirmation packets from the traffic it sends you because your upstream connection is maxed.

I don't really know much about the way CS works but it's conceivable that if you're downloading and uploading a fairly heafty amount of data at the same time (which I would assume that you would have to be for online gaming), then this could lead to the situation I'm describing.

I'll freely admit that I could be way off base here though :D

LoL - So this connection is not "strong" enough to run a game of CSS without lagging up ?

Neil

Presumably you're not downloading when you're playing CS Ben, so that wouldn't be the cause?

Might be worth running one of the network meters, like dumeter, on your server while playing CS.

What is the server used for - ie are people downloading content from the server while you are playing?

Do you get the same problem if CS is the only network activity on your BB?

Nooo

My server just hosts my in internet connection. I have DUMeter installed and when I play CSS it uses about 14K download and about 8 - 13k upload constant (which is about normal i think)

my internet just drops out randomly even if the connection is idle! The modem loses connection to the NTL network and the "cable" light goes of on my modem.

This is not a sever or machine issue due to the fact the modem is losing the network connection itself. I can reboo the modem with no effect too....its almost like my area is being caned and the modem gives up.
