I was planning to go to Edinburgh in the summer for a few days and was thinking about flights and so on, and thought it might be cheaper to book now, but on my many searches I can't seem to find anything under £130 for two adults return from Southampton to Edinburgh. I have never flown before so have no idea about costs and so on. Is this the average cost for a flight, becuase it seems a bit steep??
I seem to get resonably priced tickets when searching, i've looked on opodo.co.uk, but as soon as they add tax is way over £100 for economy tickets:confused:
Some of my family have flown up to glasgow from the midlands before for under £20, so I'm not quite sure. Anybody have any ideas?

Well, just keep checking round, you should be able to beat that i'd think.

www.easyjet.co.uk
www.flybmi.com
www.lastminute.co.uk (And you can book well in advance, the name is a bit misleading in that respect)

I just checked easyjet (http://www.easyjet.com/en/book/index.asp) and the closest airport to you they fly from seems to be Bristol. I did a quick search and flying (as an example) 10 July, returning 20 July totaled £71 and odds.

Better to do your own search, with possible dates to and from Glasgow, and see if its worth while.

'Summer' is a bit vague - any particular month?

edit - BA can do a mid week (tues-fri) break in August for £124 total.

tbh, you're not going to get much better than that. The taxes anywhere on domestic flights are hideous... Maybe it'd be better to see if you can get a flight/hotel deal on last minute or something?

Fare enough, I never been on a plane or really on holiday anywhere, so I have no idea of prices for flights so I guess it would be cheaper to get a virgin train all the way up there...:disturbd: I might check that out.

Thanks for you help! I really didnt realise flying was so expensive! I thought my passport cost me enough! lol

You'd be better off getting a cheapo to france or spain tbh.... You wouldn't beleive how much chepaer it is to go abroad than it is to stay in the UK... :disturbd:

So, it's £65 return, each, all taxes paid?

TBH that's about as good as you're going to get. Don't pay too much attention to headline-grabbing £1 fares from the likes of Ryanair, they are few and far between.

This air fare, once you strip out tax, is something like £20 each way per person, which is very good really. I'd book on the basis of that quote, it will only get more expensive as your date of travel draws closer.

www.ryanair.com (http://www.ryanair.com)

Cheap and no frills airline. but when you are doing such short distances, who needs a meal and cinema setup onboard?
I went to Austria for £40 return and had no problems.
And that included taxes.

You don't get a film on European routes even if you fly BA. And you don't get a meal on domestic flights unless you fly at mealtimes, although the pie and free coffee is nice.

Beware of Ryanair, they will land you on a grassy airfield 50 miles from the city they say they are taking you to.

Ok yeah that is true, they do favour the smaller airports away from the big cities to avoid higher parking prices, but if thats near where you want to go, they are good.
A lot of people knock them, but I've flown several times with them now and havent had any problems.

Another option would be to phone up British Airways as they offer cheaper airfares if you particpate in their Courier service. You have to pick up an envelope / parcel at the starting airport and deliver it at your destination airport in return for a cheaper airfare.

lol, scary! I had a quick look and southampton isn't even on the list of airports, bournemouth is, but they only fly to 3 places :disturbd: Hence why having to go to southampton in the first place. Man flying is difficult! :Yikes:

This link gives you the destinations from Edinburgh airport. See if anything closeby is on it, and then look at the airline

Suspect this may not necessarily help with this specific enquiry but a) worth a punt maybe and b) useful respource for others: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/flightchecker/

Checks Ryanair, Mytravelite, BMIbaby and Flybe (but not easyjet) in one search.

hmm only southampton, its annoying living here, no cities around! I used to live in the midlands, surrounded by 5 big cities and easy to get anywhere, and also i had my mummy to ferry me everywhere! lol! :D

I checked out some virgin train fares, but there about the same price for a 7 hour train journey, and virgin trains always get cancelled somewhere along the way, or majorly over subscribed! I spent many a time sat on my lugguge in the gangway outside the toilet...not good:disturbd:

I better get saving then! ;) Thanks for the help guys!

The train is a much better deal, i went to edinburgh via train last month and it cost me £25 return, but that was from manchester! i have a student railcard so get 1/3 off all journeys for £18 a year.
I also went to amsterdam in january with easyjet cost me £7.00 each way with £10 taxes..now that's a bargain!

I'm gonna go searching for any bargains i can up to the date, i might get cheaper if some offer happens to come along! actually i think i get a railcard with my student bank account, but hsbc are taken months to actaully convert my account even though i applied before xmas!

I'm moving all the way to errr Bounemouth Uni, its just up the road, you see I can't really afford to move to a student house or to commute so it's good old Bournemouth for me. It hasn't really got a good reputation and I only need DDD to get in, but it does have a really good Computing course that offers a 4 year course and the 3rd year is a work placement year, so I'm happy with that, I havn't seen any other uni's except Bath that do placement years for Computing. They also have some really great computing things there, such as the same software that was used for the Lord of The Rings special effects, I think they specialise in animation. So its not too bad ;) I should really fill out my loan form though  Not fun.

Where have you been going to uni and what course?

As for flights, it seems to be the chepest and easiest option just to save up and try and get the cheapest, lol, it'll just be less money for me to waste shopping in Edinburgh!:D
