A new Network Rail directive that maintenance workers will have to wear hard hats on the railways at all times will cost £1m in new hats and £3m in signs reminding workers to wear them.

I can hardly see a hard hat saving you if a train hits you at >70mph  maybe we should make every pedestrian wear one:erm:

Thanks to bbc.co.uk for brining this strange fact to our attention.

No but when you're working on the railway (all day long :D) it'd save your noggin when a colleague on top of a carriage dropping a wrench on your head.

Friend of mine used to work on the railway, he had a few accidents like falling backwards onto a live rail (which thankfully the supervisor had turned off!) and getting his hands stuck in the join of two suction pipes in the braking system of two carriges which would have meant a trip up to Liverpool on the outside of the train if his supervisor hadn't found him!

stops slapheads from looking like swan vestas when it gets a bit sunny as well......
as for signs, the prices they charge for them verge on the ridiculous and thats why they are dearer than the hats.
