currently using simply-call.com but I've seen others (www.telediscount.co.uk (http://www.telediscount.co.uk/)) that are cheaper per minute. Obviously I'm on an NTL line and I want to pay as little as possible to talk to a friend in sweden. Anyone used telediscount?
who do you use for your interenational calls?

cheers

I didn't think you could use a carrier on an ntl line?

Yes you can. We do (actually, did, and do on Telewest now).

We use onetel btw. I haven't really looked ot others, as the monthly bill isn't very high (despite calling abroad regularly). Never had a problem with onetel (except for them trying to convince us to use them for national calls as well).

Here is an easy to use comparison site.
I use cheapestcalls on Telewest line and it does exactly what they say, should work on NTL also

I use Telediscount as well as Cheapest Calls (actually also Telediscount but cheaper) www.cheapestcalls.co.uk (http://www.cheapestcalls.co.uk) and they both work pretty well. Nobody can come close to Cheapest Calls - not OneTel or any of the others. And yes before any questions are asked, they do bill you exactly what they advertise and even on ntl: lines.

Deppeneds on what country you call. eg if its the states use One tel 4p per min.Or use a NTL call plan and it's only 2p per minute to the USA. NTL 5p call plan takes some beating.

Yes, you can. I use One-tel on my NTL line. Instead of dialling 1877 and then the number straight away, you dial an 0800 number, wait for a voice, then dial. A bit slower, but just as free.

OneTel are great on prices, especially to overseas mobiles, which I call a lot. Most prices other people quote are landlines only and hike it for foreign cellphones, but OneTel don't. They only add a very small surcharge.

How about Skype? http://www.skype.com

Internet to Internet works brilliantly. I've not used the Skype Out feature but I've heard it works quite well.

Play.com has skype enabled VOIP phones here: http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=srmr&page=title&r=GADG&title=615520 for 30 of your English pounds. Get you Swedish mate to get one and your calls will be free (as long as you have an internet connection of course!).

Actually you will find that this service is the best (as low as a national rate UK call 3p/2p per minute daytime/evening):

http://justdial.atspace.com

Many destinations are covered, and you can call mobiles too.

justdial is a rip off, or maybe you're trying to earn some commisions? :D
People - use comparison webs like niftylist mentioned above or http://www.cheapestinternationalcalls.com or http://www.internationalcheapcalls.com and find out who is cheapest for you destination today - to call one country is cheaper using telestunt, other country - telediscount or cheapestcalls and so on... and also companies sometimes changing access numbers and prices.

I want to amend my two-pennies worth. Don't bother with a VOIP phone, just buy a pair of mic-fitted headphones and download skype. 1.2p min any landline worldwide.

Better still, get a couple of headsets and use MSN or something like that.

Voice, Video, and data comms all in one. No extra charge apart from the cost of your internet connection.

Two headsets, one in uk one in sweden would also mean free on skype. Either way better than dial-in services if you are regular conversationalists.

Wouldn't free skype or using MSN necessitate the people the OP is calling actually having a PC and an Internet Connection?

Indeedy. Skype to skype is free, skype to landline 1.2p per min worldwide.

skype to phone is 1.4p (incl VAT) to most popular countries, not worldwide! http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/rates/all_rates.html?currency=GBP
so its still worth using ordinary ntl phone to call say .. France landline - Telesavers and Dialaround offers 1p/m ;)
Yes, some countries are cheaper using Skype (specially to call mobiles), but most countries are cheaper to call using 'dial through' providers - its worth comparing Skype and www.cheapestinternationalcalls.com (http://www.cheapestinternationalcalls.com)

I noticed that some companies offering calls via 07744 numbers do better deals than the others in terms of available destinations. I decided to compile a list of 07744 providers for easier comparison. I hope this can be helpful Download Failed (1)

It works simply bt dialiing an 07744 number i.e 07744 700 300 which has an extensive list of available destinations. then it will transfer you to an international destination, and it works by using your inclusive cross network minutes on o2, orange, and some vodafone accounts. check with your operator and check your bill.

You could buy a Vonage connection and a number local to you, send the router to Sweden and plug it in there, you could then call your friend on a UK local number.

jetnumbers : Get a virtual phone number and answer your calls anywhere in the world! All calls will be charged at a local rate, regardless the origin of the phone line (land or mobile).

Hi

I think that is most unfair to say. I have used www.reallyjustdial.co.uk for some time now, and the rates are most competitive. The thing to remember is that going for cheap rates you are at risk of losing voice quality as well. I have experienced this in many of the companies that are offering cheap rates.

Secondly if I understand this correctly, price and access number change is due to the fact that the call has to be passed by carriers from country to country till it reaches its destinations, if its peak time for the carrier that is passing the call that carrier will charge higher than that carrier that is passing a call in its off peak time

In addition, there is also a difference in rates that varies for peak and off-peak for each carrier and hence the difference in price once all is calculated

You can see this variance if you check www.reallyjustdial.co.uk, which I think still offers very competitive rates

Regards

Hi

Many companies are providing cheap international calls. It is very unfair to say that quality of line is very bad with some companies. All these companies are branding their product on targetting to particular countries to which they are giving cheaper rates.

I used http://www.telethunder.com which is also cheaper to some countries. It will be better to find the cheapest rate to the country by comparing different companies through the website which is providing comparative rates.
