How much power does each put out?

Can an alternator theoretically put out more power (in amps) than a regular starter motor can consume?

These specs are a little hard to come by on the net so I'm wondering if anybody here knows.

What exactly is the problem Roger? :)

Reason I ask is afaik the alternator only produces it's output once the engine is running. This would then typically be up to 14v.

The starter motor consumes a LOT more than an alternator can produce, 100-250 amp is not unheard of.

Thats why we have big batteries that can give 90+ amps when needed.

I am informed that alternators can supply between 45-60 amp.
And yes as above, the alternator will not supply any current until the engine is running and turning it (obviously).

Hmm, now that sounds handy for some low voltage projects...

Thanks for the reply Zoombini :)

I needed to know for an engineering project in the near future.
