According to an Agence France-Presse report, Sony spokesperson Kenichi Fukunaga explained that the expected high demand for the PSP in North America means that the company may delay the European PSP release and ship the consoles that would've been sold here over to America.

:notopic: But why on earth is that a reason to hate Americans??

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

America is a far larger market than Europe, & alwys gets things earlier than the UK-Films/DVDs/games etc etc, but to "hate" them because of it is....errr....just plain wrong IMO.

If you want a PSP, but are pee'd off that Sony Europe don't value your business enough to let this happen, then you have 2 choices....

1) Buy an imported USA PSP.

2) Don't buy a PSP at all, & vote with your wallet.

3) Move to The USA or Japan, where invariably pretty much everything gets released 1st. ;)

Or don't buy a PSP but get a Nintendo DS as they are out on the 11 march at only £99. They are great having got one myself already.

:notopic: But why on earth is that a reason to hate Americans??
Cause it's more fun to hate Americans than it is to hate Sony... and it gets a better response on a forum too ;)

Sony have not provided a European release date for the PSP yet, just USA.

Would I be right in thinking that it's not released in the USA or UK until March sometime?

Stephen
10-02-2005, 11:08
USA release is the 24 march. the UK may/june or later.

Yes there have been dead pixels but this happens on all TFT LCD displays not just the PSP, the nintendo DS suffers same problem.

there were a couple of videos on the net of the UMD slot popping open but the people holding the machines were really bending them to cause the latch to pop open.

Batteries seem to last 3-6hrs depending on what you are doing but as it is rechargable I don't see it as a problem.

I have not got a PSP but I do have a DS and it is fab.

Nintendo are making a MP3 and MPEG video adapter for the DS and Gameboy Advance that will allow you to listen to music and watch videos from a standard SDCard.

I guess you need to ask yourself whether you want to play PlayStation style games on a mobile device or something different.

Oh and by the way what is TFT LCD

What does it do

Stephen
10-02-2005, 12:15
It is the name of the display.

Well I do think the PSP has slightly better graphics. would not say it will have the best games, it will have most games that your PS2 will have though. For new and cool games I think the DS will be better.

If you want a system that is inovative and very different(touch screen and also mic, alot of games are already putting these to good use.) then get the DS I only got mine yest but already I love it. Also is only going to be £99 the PSP will be about £150-£180.

Not true at all so far only 2 N64 games are released on DS. The DS has Splinter cell Coming out as well as Need for Speed underground, all the EA sports games and possibly Command and Conquer. Many other big titles are also coming out. Check these things out before you say something like that.

Then again the PSP is just releasing all the games that are already on the PS2.

The DS is a completly new console the PSP is just a portable playstation at heart.

Well until you have actually tried both, and/or owned them spent some time with them then don't start with all your fanboy nonsense. I have owned/played every games console released in the last 15 yrs and they all have their own pluses and minuses. They all do somethings better and some things worse than others.

had a jap one for 4 weeks with 3 games, sold it to buy 2 DS's and still have change left over, best thing i ever did.

Its a nice piece of Kit for sure and will sell loads because of that, but have found the Ds with its touch screen more FUN.

Think sony have missed the boat TBH, if released as suggested nowas winter 2005 then it'll be in direct competition from xbox360 launch where parents and kids will be wanting the next best thing.....PSP with ps2 style graphics at expensive price or xbox360 with true Next Gen graphics - know what i would choose and its not made by Sony

its way too early to say which is the better machine.

See, its the games that make a machine, not specs. I still play my GBA SP more than any other console or my PC. Outrun on the bog, i literally wept with joy, this is the kinda stuff that dreams were made of :disturbd:

anyway, if the DS has the better games, it will do well, way too early to say. Saying that, the mpeg4 on the move is a big draw, how quickly would the flight go if you have a week of neighbours to watch!

wont buy anything yet though, will need a few more months at least to see what games are worth having.

The DS Is fun! But they are different, PSP is much more of a portible media center that carrys the playstation name (closer to a vision of a media center which i think the PS3 will be) while the DS is a pure out and out game console

August release?

Amazon.co.uk still lists the UK debut of the Sony PlayStation as 24 June 2005, but that date was called into question today. If High Street retailer Dixons' PSP pre-order service is anything to go by, the eagerly anticipated handheld console will not appear here until August.

The Dixons service, launched today, is offering up to two PSPs per person for £179 a pop. The pre-order page on the company's web site lists 1 August 2005 as the "estimated" release date.

September 1st it is then!

Sony finally announced this morning that the PSP would hit Europe on September 1 with a 179 (249 Euro) pricetag attached.

For the price - which is at the top end of estimates that have been knocking around the industry for months - European gamers will get the Value Pack bundle. This includes the unit itself, a battery pack, a 32 MB Memory Stick Duo, remote control headphones, an AC Adaptor, a wrist strap, a cleaning cloth, a pouch and a UMD containing several non-playable demos.

As an added bonus you can pick up a free copy of the Spider-Man 2 movie on UMD. All you need to do is pick up your PSP during the first few weeks of the European launch and register it on www.yourpsp.com (which is now live, by the way)

The Japanese electronics giant Sony is demanding that companies importing its hotly anticipated PlayStation Portable to Britain reveal their customers' identities so the equipment can be tracked down.
Gamers who have bought the imported version ahead of its British launch in September could see the consoles impounded, following the launch of a legal action by Sony.

sony will not give a proper reason as to why they object they have only stated that importing 'confuses' consumers and that there will be a lack of 'support' of the unit should any technical difficulties with the machine arise.

my own conversion of the above:

importers will harm sales figures for the EU territory, we want to charge the consumer more for the unit as well as increase the attachment and cost rate for games.

Ok - It's nearly time for the uk launch.

Now - I'm pretty set on getting one. The trouble it I've read that there have been an awful lot of these with dead pixels on the screen.

I know some of you here have one already, what I'd like to know is what was your screen like?

Also - I like racing type games - which do I get - wipeout - or ridge racer.

I am planning to get one from argos in case it does have a dodgy screen - so I can take it back.

Stephen
17-08-2005, 20:12
The screen on mine was free of Dead pixels. I am sure most places would be willing to change the system if there are a few dead pixels but I think that there are less likely to be problems with the screens now.

I only have wipeout so I can only recommend that as not played ridge racer, although it is meant to be great.

there are a number of programs out there you can use to convert files to mp4 and they can look great if you get the balance right between quality and the size of the file. Although to get the mp4 files to play you need to manually create the movie folder on the mem card after the PSP formats it.:D

Hope you enjoy it

Ok - so I'm thick :) - what's an online portal for?

And - do you think I'll be able to logon to my wireless network. What I mean is - is there somewhere I'll be able to add my wireless password and ssid name?

Hey, I am off to America next week. Whhat are the drawbacks of getting a psp while there? I can get Wipeout, Burnout, the PSP Value pack and a 256mb stick for around $380 which is £211! Much cheaper!

You won't be able to play the film discs (as far as I know) here. Also how would you take it back if it develops dead pixels?

No, But I am going to America. I will use it while there as well, dead pixels show themselves quickly dont they? No idea to be honest m8. I read that sometimes they show up after a week. I've also read that they go away with 'gentle massaging' of the screen.....

Personally I'd say they'd show up pretty soon yes.

So - as long as you don't care about the film side of it I can't see a problem.

I got mine over there in April. There are no draw backs if you won't be playing the UMD movies much. But you can easily buy them over the net.

The power supply is not a problem. It is just an AC adaptor that will work here all you need is the lead that is off the normal full size PS2. I use mine all the time.

The settings for the wireless will allow you to setup a connection to your network and save them for later use. I use it frequently to connect to the net via my PSP and download the updates and game addons Wipeout has had 4 packs released already.

Well, that's a very good thing then, as I've decided to get wipeout :) (so free upgrades and packs sounds good) I've already ordered Untold Legends : Brotherhood of the blade as it looks more or less like a Dungeon Siege clone, and I really like Dungeon Siege.

as far as I have tried the only game I have with full online play is Major League Baseball. It sometimes times out but that might just the the connection to my Router, same goes for the PSP upgrade option it seems to loose the connection every so often.

I don't think there will be any differnce in BATT life as it is going to be the same battery in the EU models. most of the time I manage between 4-6hrs.

But thats it right? The connection is also more likely to be to do with the american servers and such. It wont have any problem connnecting to the european ones will it?

What happens if you put the EU Firmwire onto the psp, will that by-pass region lock out

Damien
26-08-2005, 11:24
Will American consoles connect to the European Portal?

Stephen
26-08-2005, 11:28
I am honestly not sure if it would even let you change to EU firmware, although might as well try it when there is an update available.

As for connecting a US console to the EU portal this might not be a problem as you will just have to get the address for the site. The 2.0 firmware sets the US psp site as ts home page but you can change that.

connecting to games from other countries won't be a problem as thereis no region lock out on games, although I would imagine that buying the UK software will have different server addresses built in.

I am going to try out Twisted metal's online mode tonight and see what happens as not tried it yet.

I doubt they could do that as they don't have region locks on the games and also I don't think there is any way for them to identify where the machine was bought, internally the only thing different is the UMD region code. Well I think so anyway.

I borrowed my best mates younger brother's PSP overnight on Tuesday, he bought it in Hong Kong, it had one of the Sharp screen's (so called lower quality) and the unit felt very solid, quite a bit heavier than i thought it would be but the clarity of the screen and vibrance of the colours was amazing.

He lent me Fifa Soccer, Dead 2 Rights, Need for Speed Underground: The Rivals, and Ape Escape.

All 4 of the games were very playable, loading times werent bad but could be improved I think, I was totally blown away.

If you are going to get one then Lik-Sang will still import to the UK despite Sony trying to stop them and you can get a Value Pack for £155 delivered, the Japanese console's WILL play UK UMD Movies.

Build quality on mine is great, no dead pixels either. It would be good to have a longer Batt life, but you can't have everything.:)

I am tempted to get a Jap one as well so I can have the white one as I think it looks so nice.

It is the value of all goods purchased that must not exceed £145.

As others have said, you do not have to declare the goods but if you did get stopped and they had reasonable doubt that you did not buy it in the UK and take it with you they could confiscate it or just charge you the duty and VAT!

Yep games are great many of them play and look almost like their PS2 versions. Console is very comfortable, I have not had any problems holding the console for extended periods of time.

Also the battery lasting 4-6hrs is still quite a long time, I have yet to have it run out on me while playing but then I don't travel any longer than 2hrs at a time.

Depends on how obvious you make it:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/3716690.stm

Clothes can easily be found as the wash-codes will be in Fahrenheit and not Celsius!

If you come back with a suitcase loaded with stuff that obviously looks new they might start asking questions...

No you would be able to prove that because you would have a UK receipt that you could send them if they questioned you.

They look for tell-tale signs like price tags still attached to clothes, iPod in its original box, etc. but they would only check you if they decided to do a spot check on you as you walk through customs.

I take it is £145 per person, if my family who are unlikely to reach the limit takes the games and such

Just a thought - why don't you get the psp magazine that future publishing has put out. It's got loads of game reviews - and pictures of the console. As well as good guides on making psp movies from dvd's and copying music onto the psp.

I've got one and it's very good, Oh and if you have a ps2 - it comes with a ps2 demo discs that's got LOADS of videos of psp games running.

Yeah, I think iPsp or something does it. Sonys software is unlikely to work on macs due to the standard industry practice of ****ing me off. I am gonna use iPsp (the mac program that allows you to make videos full screen on psp)

I can't afford a large memory card initially so I'm not going to be creating any vids untill I've got a nice 1gb memory card.

Well the crappy thing requires videos to be named in such a way and also not to play full screen so i wouldnt go overboard until that is fixed

Yeah, I think iPsp or something does it. Sonys software is unlikely to work on macs due to the standard industry practice of ****ing me off. I am gonna use iPsp (the mac program that allows you to make videos full screen on psp) In the mag here it mentions 'ALTSHIIVA' for creating mp4's on mac's too. Just another thing for you to look at m8 :)

Yeah, I already use that sometimes. To converts some files to mpeg 4. Apples new os has the video codec built in anyway.

with the new update it allows mp4 and the avc to play in full resolution I think. However they still have to be named strangely and also the 2 formats need their own formats. And the first thing you need to do is create a folder with a specific name in the main part of the mem card in order to get the PSP to look for videos

Sony really do some unexplainable crap sometimes, I do not know why they did this. Other than to promote UMD movies. Anyway, Apple are having a event on the 7th September. It may be the video ipod so i will wait until then and make a choice about the psp or vPod

Well - it works at the end of my garden - 150ft ish.

Browsing is ok - BUT you have to enter the address etc kind of like a mobile phone.

Don't know about battery life yet - I've only just took it off charge - but I would think it'd do ok as it's not accessing the umd drive.

It certainly seems nice :)

I'm not sure if it's just me - but it doesn't seem very loud through the headphones.

Um - I DO have a dodgy pixel but it's right at the edge of the screen so it's not too bad.

There must be something weird going on with the ones supplied - so I guess I'll ditch them :)

edit - and yes I did make sure the avls was turned off ;):)

edit - again - I just found a little tag on the psp headphones that says 'Max 90dB' - MMMmmm

It certainly looks a lot better and also you can select a higher resolution as well as bit rate, which gives a much sharper image. I got an mp4 and the AVC version of a film trailer, think it was off ign.com and the difference between the 2 was very noticable.

I've done some - aparently there are two options - it is possible to downgrade back to V1.5

Or there have been reports that v2 has been cracked - so far only allowing 64kb of space to be used - but you can play pong on it;

You can do the update through the usb is you've got internet access and a mini usb cable.

Nah, its just a a bigger memory card, so you'll use the same amount of power. The memory stick pro duo for PSP is limited to 2gb, but regular Memory Stick Pro can go upto 4gb. You can run a non-PSP Memory Stick Pro on your PSP by using this tutorial. (http://www.pspcrazy.com/nonduotopsptutorialpspcrazy.htm)

The extra battery pack you can get for £8-£10 on ebay. So you can build it yourself quite a bit cheaper.

Itake it this just means that Spiderman is a region free umd?

Here you go....

Hello https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2005/12/9.gif

There have been many posts on the Forums recently from people asking about their PSP Welcome Pack after registering with the www.yourpsp.com (http://www.yourpsp.com/) website.

This is just to assure you that your Welcome Pack, along with the very excellent Spider-Man 2 UMD, is on it's way to you. http://community.yourpsp.com/images/smilies/icon_gr8.gif

We're sending out thousands of these in big batches on a regular basis so please hang in there - they are taking some time to be processed, sent out and then delivered (I imagine that we're not the best friends of many postmen across Europe at the moment! http://community.yourpsp.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif ).

If you have only just registered your PSP on the site, please allow 28 days for delivery. If you registered your PSP during September, it may take slightly longer than 28 days for your Welcome Pack to reach you. September was our busiest time for registrations so you may need to wait just a week or two more for your welcome freebies.

Please do not email us to ask about the status of your delivery - due to the number of packs that we're sending out, we're unable to respond to all queries about the Welcome Pack personally.

Thanks for your patience and sorry to keep you waiting.

Cheers,
Charlie / Gunky

I have just been looking at a PSP, a friends son is going into hospital for treatment for cerebral palsy & he was bought one to keep him amused during his time in there.
His parents though that he would be able to watch movies, play MP3's etc on it.

How wrong they were...

I was disgusted to find that it could only hold a handful of mp3's, at a bitrate of over 128 it only held 7 songs on the 32mb card & bigger ones are really expensive.
As for playing movies, how are we expected to fit a movie on a 32mb card? no they have to purchase the special disks for it.

Not impressed at all, it may be OK for games but IMO it's a ripoff to sell it with these other features unless they can actually be used as is.

I knew exactly I could not play a Film on the 32MB card, What you expect for £180? :D Out of the BOX "Games Machine" & "Large MP3 Player" & "Multi Media Center"

MP3 at 128 Bitrate is FINE. 192 is better but I have loads of 128 & 96 even.:Yikes:

The 4GB Hard Disk (£145is h off Play.com) or £2.50 on ebay with 1 looser & then he tells you where to buy it at £145 inc Postage :p:

PS.. My Spiderman arrived 2 weeks ago. I had my PSP 7 days after the "Launch"

It is a bit like selling a DVD player without any DVDs - you have to buy them to be able to watch movies, same with this, you have to buy UMDs.

Or, it is a bit like selling a VCR with a single blank 2hr cassette. You can only record 2hr on it and then it is full - you can either then copy over it or buy new cassettes.

So I hear - by going here

http://mob.e-messenger.net/mobile/

I've not tried it - but I will at some point I guess :) trouble is unless you have the keyboard it takes ages to type anything in.I just tried this and it seems to work well.

All I need now is a keyboard and I'm set.

No it is not a joke post.

I can be disgusted with what it can hold by default if I want to be.
The lad will have to use his old walkman because this fancy new thing is naff as an mp3 player.

And it is not naff as an mp3 player if you buy a decent size memory stick ;):)

It makes quite a good all round entertainment centre.

It would be complete if I had my spiderman 2 umd, but I don't :)

Try reading the thread.

I did not buy it, I have been trying to get MP3's on it for a lad that's going into hospital.
I wouldn't waste my money on one of these if I wanted an MP3 player, I'd get one with ample memory, not one where I had to purchase even more at high costs in order to be able to store more than a single album on it.

You can double the amount of music you'll fit on it then, by converting it to atrac first.

The PSP's main function isn't a MP3 player though.. Its main function is to play games and UMD movies, things such as photos and mp3 tracks are extra functions, a bit like mobile phones, they are mainly used to talk to and text people, but they can take pictures and you can listen to mp3's on them, but you need extra memory to have lots of songs and photos on it.
So not sure why the PSP should be any different? The PSP is a great handheld games console and plays movies nicely on UMD's the extra functions are just a bonus, and of course they will be a cost associated with it, if it came with a 1 gig memory card everyone would moan it was too expensive.

(BTW they are actually bringing out a pack with a 1 gig memory stick - the PSP Giga Pack see here (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=61354))
