I'm an html newbie and am trying to incorporate a webpage access counter into my index.htm - most of the ones I've found have "Server Side Includes" - is there any counter software on ntl servers that is accessable from users html code ?

Hey 'SkiBore' & welcome to Nthellworld.co.uk! :wavey:

Counters unfortunatly don't use HTML. They use other Website Languages such as PHP.

There are some free java counters (if you google it you'll find them) out there that i suggest you try as these don't require much HTML knowledge to get working.

As far as i know NTL dont support PHP anyway

Hope this helps...

They don't:(

The problem is that the counter needs somewhere to keep a running total. This needs to be accessed by a server-side script, NTL do not support these.

In order to do it client-side all internet users would need write-access to your website (not a good idea! )

I think you might be able to find some third-party providers, though you might have to pay for them

How do these work? Don't they need write access to the ntl webspace?

There are loads of free counters available out there, you just get a small bit of HTML to copy & paste onto your page and their server takes care of the rest.

Some to try:
http://www.bravenet.com/
http://www.statcounter.com/
http://www.counted.com/

You will fine tons if you do a Google search.

Thanks for all the input - I had a good look round & the one at http://yaxy.hypermart.net seems to work. Most of the others seem to want your email address minimum to sign up, so they'll inevitably try and sell you a full web site stats package.

MikeyB - like the ZX Spectrum pics, I still have an Apple ][ in the loft ! no idea if it still works - remember paying £500 for it - for a 1mhz 6502 . . .
