I want to relocate my STB to a more convenient position but the existing cable is too short. NTL have quoted me £25 / metre for a new cable but this seems horribly expensive. Is this some sort of special cable and does anyone know if I can obtain a more reasonably priced one and if so where?

:welcome:

You could do it yourself, but you would be violating ntl's terms & conditions, & if you screwed it up somehow you'd have to pay to get it fixed.

But, it is possible - so long as you get decent quality cable with properly fitted connectors

If you do do it yourself, get the cable made up properly. Dodgy cable, & poorly fitted F plugs, can affect your service & that of your neighbours.

They WHAT? £25/metre? They charged me £25 for the job.. and the funny thing is, rather than reusing the cable that was already running past the point I wanted it moved to they took it all down and ran another 10 metres (atleast) of new cable to the point.. Beats me.. A 10 minute job took them over an hour. They wanted to charge me £50 at first I think, but I refused and they quickly told me £25. Call them again and double check.
