hi everyone,

i am trying to let someone ftp some stuff from their pc to mine. I have set up the ftp server and they cannot access it using the ip address I gave them. I am not connected by a router and my firewall is turned off.

Is it still possible to run an ftp on ntl broadband???

What IP address did you give them? The IP address is allocated dynamically (in theory - though in practice it is pretty static). If you are sure the IP address you gave them is still correct (use ipconfig /all from a command line if on XP), then it should work. Are you sure there's no firewall issue at the remote end?

the ip I gave them is 80.5.*.*, this has come from the nthellworld proxy checker under the "your real ip is" bit.

Should be OK, but I suggest you edit your post to remove the last part of the IP for security. My fault, I was just checking you were using the right ip - I didn't mean for you to post it. Sorry.

I do, consider services such as DynDns.org for a nicer solution...
You can then use clients to update the addresses in case your's changes

hmmmmmmmmmm, i thought you werent allowed to run a server from an ntl residential connection :confused:You are allowed as long as access is pw protected and it doesn't intefere with other people. I do it a lot to transfer files from work to my home.

I can open from command line
ftp
ftp> open <ip address>, but don't get prompted for anything. After a short while, I get 'connection terminated by remote host'.

I don't have a 'proper' ftp client (hence only command line in XP), but would have expected to be prompted for user name/password.

John is correct - I have tried connecting to your ip address via ftp and get no response - what is your exact set-up, and what ftp server are you running ?

You are solely responsible for the setup and security of all servers that you may run on your PC. You are also responsible for all traffic that may pass through your PC. ntl cannot be held liable for any losses or damages that may occur as a result of a compromise of your server. Please note that your account may be subject to immediate suspension or disconnection without notice, if any security breaches do occur or any server causes any degradation in network performance. You should also note that running servers on your PC may cause your own connection to operate in a less than optimal manner.
Webservers: see Para 8, Websites
Remote Access: All remote access ( FTP; SSH ; PC Anywhere etc) must be password protected & the address must not be publicly advertised.
Game: If the game in question has a password/IP access restriction option this must be used. Your IP address must not be publicly advertised on Gaming sites etc.
Email:
You must ensure that you do not further the sending of Unsolicited Bulk Email by others. This applies to both material that originates on your system and also third party material that might pass through it. This includes but is not limited to a prohibition on running an "open mail relay", ie a machine which accepts mail from unauthorized or unknown senders and forwards it onward to a destination outside of your machine or network. If your machine does relay mail, on an authorized basis, then it must record its passing through your system by means of an appropriate "Received" line.
Other: You may run other servers but be aware that ntl reserve the right to restrict access to them should they cause network problems or should we receive complaints.
We may, at our discretion, run manual or automatic systems to determine your compliance with our User Policy (e.g. scanning for "open mail relays"). You are deemed to have granted permission for this limited intrusion onto your network or machine.
Please be aware that ntl do not offer any DNS services, e.g. Domain Name Redirection. The ntlworld service is based on dynamic IP addressing and you must not specify IP addresses (other than DNS servers) in the network settings for your internet connection.
Please note that should we receive any complaints about any server that you may be running that your Internet access may be suspended without notice pending further investigation.

Just to be sure - have you checked your IP address, i.e that it hasn't changed since you gave it to your friend? (Sorry if this is 'obvious').

no it hasn't

until about 2 hours ago my pc was behind my router, which i have taken off the net and am now connected straight to the web (rest of the house not too happy as they have no internet) once i restarted everything and re-registed with the ntl online registration thingy i restarted again and i then check my ip whic is the one i have given them.

Clutching at straws somewhat, but I assume your FTP server is not configured to use a non-standard port (i.e. not 21)? Does it have any logging facilities which show failed attempts by Paul or myself?

open a dos window on your pc and issue the command "netstat -na" - and post the results.

I have hi-lighted the relevant entry in red - this shows that your machine is listening on port 21 - however, I cannot connect to it which suggests some form of firewall is blocking connectivity.

I have blackice defender which i had shut down, but it was still running silently in the background, so after forcing it to shut down it all started working.
