BT customers should immediately switch either their whole phone line to ntl or Telewest, or if that's not possible, they should use a third party provider such as TalkTalk, OneTel, 18866 etc.

Switch to NTL? And then pay 3p per minute plus a 5p connection charge for that 1 minute call to tell someone you're running late. Hmmm, which is cheaper, 8p to NTL or 5p to BT? Don't forget that all daytime calls after 8am will be dearer with NTL than BT and that's before you get the advantage of Best Friend and Friends and Family discounts with BT. :)
