How would I go about transferring my broadband connection from my old pc to my new one? Is it just a case of plugging the modem into the back of the new machine, or is it something more complicated?
If it makes any difference, the old pc ran on Windows Me , while the new on is running XP.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated - thanks in advance:)

Assuming you're using ethernet like a good boy...

Ensure ethernet network connection is set to obtain address automatically
Plug ethernet from modem to PC
Reboot modem
Wait for connection lights to illuminate
Surf!

Also make sure your connection settings are as follows...on IE top of the page, click tools-internet options-connections, make sure never dial has a dot next to it, click on lan settings, and make sure none of the boxes have ticks in (some areas/systems need the auto detect ticked) but this is not really needed.

Restart the modem before you connect to your new pc and with xp you should find the pc will do everything else.

If you go to http://autoreg.autoregister.net and click start then follow the directions you need to register the pc to the modem.

If mazolauk uses a standalone modem, there is no need to register the new PC - all that is required is a reboot of the modem.

If he uses an STB, then the MAC address of the PC will need to be registered by sending his web browser to "start.ntl"

There is no need to do this if you are using a SACM.

I currently use USB for mine.....

If I wanted to swap to Ethernet would I simply unplug the usb and plug into my ehternet and reeboot??

Is it that simple??

If your using a SACM then pretty much so yes,
Ensure that your PC is seeing your ethernet port correctly and that the settings on it are as SLM suggests above. Reboot the SACM, wait till the connection LEDs are on correctly, switch the PC on and your away.
