Hi,

I'm in Middlesbrough and have terrible download speeds. I am running xp.

Browsing is fine - not as quick as it used to be but still acceptable.
However my download speeds are terrible. I have ran various broadband speed tests and they all pretty much say the same thing:

Speed i should expect = 768kb/s
My actual speed = between 45kb/s - 124kb/s

Also getting around 18 per cent packet loss

Has anybody else had this or can anyone suggest anything to try?

I have tried ringing ntl but all i get is the usual 'Have you tried rebooting
modem' etc. They don't seem to care. Have been a ntl broadband subscriber
since day 1 but am looking into a new provider - it is going downhill very
fast in my opinion.

Any help greatly received

Gareth

Have you:
A: Cleared your cache/temp internet files.
B: Cleared your History
C: Cleared your files
D: Checked for spyware with AdAware/spybot/spyblaster/etc
E: Done a virus check.

try all these first, then, disconnect your modem for 3 mins+ then connect back up, then try your speed checks/pings

hope this helps.

Speed i should expect = 768kb/s

Where did you get that from? Its either 300kbps, 750kbps or 1.5mbps.

If you're on the 750kbps service, you should get a max download speed of around 94kB/s, as 750kbps = 94kBps (notice capital B, indicating Bytes not bits)

At least its sorted :D
