There's nothing on the server status page. When you say you can't get a connection, do you mean no IP address or that the modem lights RDY/SYNC are off/unsteady?
PM me your modem or STB mac address and I'll take a look.
Hi Greenkeeper, Hi BBKing,
Thank you both for your very quick replies.
First place i looked was the service status page.
When i say i cant get a connection, i may be saying it wrong.
The IE browser gets drawn and presented by the computer,
but it has a message that the page could not be reached.
nothing on the internet could be brought up by my cablemodem.
(thats why i'm using dialup now)
Lights:
watching them now,
PWR on.
gap
USB off.
ENET on.
U/S off.
D/S flashing at about 1.5 sec intervals.
SYNC off.
RDY flashing at about three times a second.
Havent really watched them much before ...
but i think one used to flicker in a varying sort of way
BBKing,
certainly i will PM you that,
but you'll have to tell me where to find it !!!
unless its the ip address, i have made a note somewhere ...

Yeah - the SYNC and RDY should be lit and steady. If you pick up your modem and turn it over, there you'll find the MAC address. It's a series of letters and numbers separated by colons :
[edit] Have you tried switching off the modem, waiting for 10 seconds, and switching it back on?
Extra,
i just remembered ...
i was trying to get another PC to connect last night,
with its own ethernet card,
could my cable modem have altered its settings
during my unsuccessful attempt to connect it ??
or is that absurd ??

The majority of the settings used by your cable modem are discovered by the cable modem when you switch it on. There's nothing a PC can do to the modem or vice versa.
Hi,
yes i tried switching off.
and disconnecting.
and waiting.
and switching the cable-modem on before the PC.
and switching the PC on before the cablemodem.
and every combo i could think of.
Number on back of modem on its way via PM
So the modem settings would not have been affected
by trying another machine or ethernet card ... right ??

Correct :)

The cable modem finds and locks onto a signal - the SYNC and RDY light should light and remain lit. When your PC boots, Windows looks for a server that can provide an IP address, then it asks that server for an IP address. You need an IP address to browse the Internet, access email and so on. Your IP address can change at any time, but it oftens remains the same. From what you say, it looks like your cable modem isn't finding and locking onto a signal.
well i am relieved that i have not affected the cable modem,
perhaps i should unplug it again,
and have another try.

Send that MAC address to BBKing and he'll tell you if anything is wrong with your connection :)
ive unplugged it,
i'll give it a few minutes this time ... ok
From your previous post,
i guess that the cable modem should be on before the PC ?
so before i plug it back in, i will shut down the PC.
best to do it right i spose ....

Cable modem, then PC, otherwise Windows won't automatically acquire an IP address. You can make Windows acquire an address though:
Click on Start...
Select Run
Type winipcfg and press Enter
A window will open - these are all your IP settings
In the drop-down box at the top, make sure your Cable Modem is selected - not your dial-up adaptor
Press "Renew"
An IP address should appear, providing your modem is working and Windows can find a server to provide it with an IP address.
If you press "Release" this will drop your IP address. Press "Renew" to acquire an IP address again.
interesting,
i will try that when its back to normal.
still no joy.
i will have to go to bed very soon ...
this is what i got from renew
really should get to bed ...

this is what i got from renew
Yeah - that's because your cable modem has no connection, so Windows cannot find a (DHCP) server to provide it with an IP address.
It definitely sounds like a fault. Either that or there's unplanned maintenance happening in your area. BBKing should advise.
Thanks,
i was worried i may have affected it
by trying to use another PC.
Tried again this morning after i rechecked the plug,
that occured to me last night - that it might be crooked,
or even upside down. But when i looked the plug was fine
in its hole, didn't look like it would go in upside down,
or crooked, unless the plastic was broken.
still getting nowhere.
John :(
gonna check service status again,
just in case.

Customers will prob be offline for the rest of the day in Watford, Amersham and Ayelsbury.. Techs are fixing the prob
The service status page seems to now indicate that it is an area problem:
Customers in Watford, Amersham & Aylesbury and surrounding areas may currently be experiencing a total loss of service due to issues in Watford. Our engineers are working to resolve this as a priority.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvience caused

yeah,
i just got back from the status page,
and i see a couple of posters have said thats the prob.
I am very relieved, cos i was checking around all my bits!
Hopefully it wont be too long.
Happy John :)
FYI : Sources indicate that the Watford problems are due to the disappearance of equipment. NTL engineers are sorting out replacement kit as we speak, so please be patient with them. :)
disappearance of equipment ?

Problems again in Poole today too. Poole UBR3 has croaked again (according to tech. support).
Noticed that hasn't found its way on to the service status page (not that our problems ever do).
Steve.
someones nicked their server ?As I understand it, a number if vital (and expensive) items have been stolen.

Are they on Ebay yet
ubr03pool is there, but not happy on one card. Watford has been offline for 14 hours or so and probably for a few more.

Watford is back, for me anyway,
maybe not all the watford areas ...
Interesting that that eBay item has MC16Es - they're the ones generally used in former C&W areas and Europe (EuroDOCSIS) and would be unnecessary in the US. However, it's definitely not a stray ntl one, the CPU and IO cards are different.

Could this explain the upload problems I've been having since May? :D
