I've just had a Messenger Service appear which appears to be an advert. Does anybody know what is this messenger service? How can I stop it?

Here's a screenshot of it........

They are a real pain, and so obscene. You can switch it off though.

If I remember right, if you go to start>control panel>Administrative services>services>

Then all you need to do is find messenger and switch it off then set the start up type to disabled.

Its not needed for anything unless you have a LAN, but I suppose if you used it you would know about it, if you get me ;)

HTH

edit Thanks Kronas, you beat me.:D

Go to run in the start menu and type

msconfig

then go to the STARTUP TAB and find messenger and uncheck the box "msmgs" you are looking for. Then you have to restart your system.

WNA that would disable the MS Messenger service, NOT the Windows Messenger service....

To fix that problem install a firewall !!!
The messages are indeed intended for sending critical info across a private lan, people have just been exploiting it onto the internet as well. If you have a firewall you will notice it being hit, i cant remember what port it uses though :-\
