View Full Version : Seriously Frustrating NTL Issue

I've been with NTL for a couple of years, first on the 150k, then 600k and now 1mb (just recently 1.5mb). This was all well and good when the speed increased (even though the price had gone up just a month before hand). But now im wondering if it was worth it. At least once a day, the rdy light on the cable modem starts flashing on and off and i lose the connection. Soon after, the light comes back on and the sync light dissappears! Ive tried everything I can think of, getting an engineer round to up the connection, ringing NTL "tech support" (always makes me laugh that) and reseting the modem. NTL are adament it is me that is in the wrong and there end is fine. I fail to see how this is possible! Another thing, i am also getting some packet loss, especially to US of A servers, not really sure what this is but im assuming its bad! Am i mad or is it an increase in speed for a decrease in reliability. I'm starting to lose patience with NTL and would love to hear any suggestions!

Cheers,

Reading Lad

~ Just to add to the frustration the connection failed halfway through writing this and I had to wait a couple of hours before it was back on. Sods law eh?

when the connection drops (ie rdy light flashing) check the ip address on the pc. If it is still a public ip, (starting with anything apart from 10, 169 or 192) try ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew .

What is the ip address then?

Also try accessing http://192.168.100.1 - username and password both root, then post back the information showing there.

Oh and btw, :welcome: to the site :D

You misunderstood my post... you need to check the things mentioned when the connection is NOT working.

And also i would advise you to edit your post and remove your ip address because it is not a good idea to post it on a public forum.

However, the power level does look a little bit low...

oh right, cheers ill do that n post back

the upstream power level is max'd out at 61 db. you have a return path problem the downstream should be as near to zero db as possible. it's probably a faulty f connector.

erm.. ok, wot does that mean pls and how cud i go about fixin it?

cheers,

Nothing you can do about it... it would require an engineer visit.

What area do you live in?

What johnweliqs said is not necessarily correct, in some areas the acceptable power ranges are different.

I live in reading, woodley to be exact (postcode RG5)

ambit modems have a maximum transmit level of 61 dbmv on any network anywhere. so i am correct.

I was referring to your comments about the downsteam power level...

i believe they will work between +15 and -15 dbmv according to the data sheets we had when they were first used. so the optimum signal level would be 0dbmv equal distance from either threshold.

i dnt rele need an arguement guys, a solution wud b preferable.

only way is to get a tech out. mb should be able too short that for you. at the moment the upgrade in the tsb etc.. has stop the usual troubleshooting they do, so you may have to wait until wednesday when the systems should be back up. no arguing going on just keeping the facts straight.

do you have an attenuator on the cable input of the modem. it will be a square or round item with a value on it eg. 6bd ?

on the input cable to the modem? erm, it says: "ppg ex6-49 02"

thats the f connector. if you had one you could have taken it off to increase the signal level. do you have digi tv?

yeh, but its freeview so not connectin threw a cable or anything like dat

johnwileqs

if the next tech can't increase the level you'll need a repull to a bigger cable or maybe there's a splitter in line somewhere that could be taken out. any self respect tech should be able to sort this for you

I was having random disconnections when my Downstream Receive Power Level was in the minus and the Upstream Transmit Power Level was around 54 to 55. Since they altered it in the box I have been fine and the levels are hardly ever in the minus.

Contact CS as I am sure they are not supposed to go as high as 60 I was told 55 was max.

johnwileqs

55db is the maximum we aim for to give the modem some headroom to allow for temperature affecting the signal levels, amps overheating etc..

okey dokey. cheers, ill give NTL a ring.
