I seem to be having some problems with speed.
The download is fine always around the 670/750 so quite happy about that, but uplaods seem to change all the time.

I can do a speed test and I have had them as low as 9KB/s. I also have had packet loss. I was uploading to my webspace this is in redbus house so its UK and the upload speed was only 10KB/s then it jumped to 14KB/s for s short while only to drop down again. It sesems unable to keep a steady speed.

Decided to look at the configeration and see what dBmv I was getting.
Type : Ambit ETH/USB Combo Cable Modem
Cable modem : Ambit Cable Modem
MAC address : 00:d0:59:**:34:**
IP address : **.***.**.***
Downstream Receive Power Level : 0.62 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.24 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 54.00 dBmv
new check gave me
Downstream Receive Power Level : 0.18 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 32.48 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 54.00 dBmv
then 5 mins later
Downstream Receive Power Level : 0.00 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.09 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 54.00 dBmv
another five mins
Downstream Receive Power Level : -0.18 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 32.83 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 54.00 dBmv
another five mins
Downstream Receive Power Level : -0.25 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.24 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 54.00 dBmv

the only one that is static is the upstream transimit power level. Weird as my uploads speeds are far from stable.

The power level will fluctuate anyway, i have no idea what are you are in, but i am guessing that your range is -2.5 - +2.5 dBmv so everything there looks fine.

I was in the ambit config todays first check after a slow uplaod this was straight through to a friend on 2mb as a speed test.
Type : Ambit ETH/USB Combo Cable Modem
Cable modem : Ambit Cable Modem
MAC address : 00:d0:**:f4:34:**
IP address : **.***.**.***
Downstream Receive Power Level : -2.21 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.51 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 54.25 dBmv
this was checked just after I completed a speed test on adsl as they do uplaods also.

adsl speed test ( http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedchart.asp?id=51bc9870fe86db572a51bc9870) I just don't seem to have a steady speed anymore.

I will be posting regular speed tests to show just how unstable this connection is now.

I am using a pace 120
connected to a linksys router ( one pc straight into router mine 2 other pc connected via one cable from a hub)
OS windows 2k pro

This latest speed test was from Robin Walkers page.

Wed, 25 Aug 2004 10:58:46 GMT
1st 128K took 1472 ms = 89043 Bytes/sec = approx 741 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1452 ms = 90270 Bytes/sec = approx 751 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1452 ms = 90270 Bytes/sec = approx 751 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 4186 ms = 31312 Bytes/sec = approx 261 kbits/sec
I cannot say I have constant speeds anymore. For a while pages load like I am back on 56K or time out a little later its all back to normal.
The above speed test was completed with only my pc on the children are still in bed.

I don't suppose by any chance you have updated your firmware to the HyperWRT have you? i did this and it wrecked my connection....

no I haven't updated the linksys for ages and it messed up so i removed it and went back to the old one. My Linksys is the version 2

Can you actually upload anything conistently? I for one can't! I'm in the Ashield area of Notts and can't seem to get a 1mb file to upload everytime I try, maybe 2 out of 5 attempts will work one time, then none will work!

My Upstream Power level is +58 dBmV btw according to my Surfboad 4100 Signal Status screen.

Another user, Ashover, started a similar thread in this very same forum:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=16470

And I started one here about similar problems:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=16465

So if people in different areas are having similar trouble, it would appear to be a Nationwide problem that NTL need to address PDQ!!

My upload speeds are as unstable as download just download is noticeable due to browsing being slow at times.

I was uplaoding to my website the other day the server is in London and the speeds using FlashFXP ranged from 8kB/s to 10kB/s this falls short from what I should have and speed tests on ADSL guide also show slower uploads at times then when you do it again its nearer where it should be.

These speeds are noticeable at different times of the day. I am looking at ways to pinpoint the problem more like doing tracert to websites I have found slow while they are slow. Tracerts to webserver I am uploading too.

My uploads bounce around all the time and sometimes stop altogether. I've just tried to upload a 1mb attachment through my NTL Webmail and it's the same scenario, it won't upload consistently.

Tried 4 times, 2 successful but upload was very slow, 2 fail where page cleared then hung? Speeds up and down like a yoyo! So if I have problems uploading to NTL's own web mail it can't be other services like Yahoo or Hotmail at fault!

You must check all pcs for viruses/worms and P2P/ adware etc coz this can give you results like this on 300K:-

Wed, 25 Aug 2004 23:35:49 UTC
1st 128K took 9250 ms = 14170 Bytes/sec = approx 118 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 5062 ms = 25893 Bytes/sec = approx 215 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 6594 ms = 19877 Bytes/sec = approx 165 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 4375 ms = 29959 Bytes/sec = approx 249 kbits/sec

It seems to me that downstream power is just a function of your local cable and street box. Upstream power depends on a lot of other things as well, mine changes from

Upstream transmit signal power = 38.7 dBmV

to 50+ occasionally. It is currently at its lowest I've ever seen it, following a reboot at 3am yesterday (by ntl reseg?)

It is so low coz my downstream (Terayon) is now:-

Downstream received signal power = 13.5 dBmV
SigQu: Signal to Noise Ratio = 34.1 dB
SigQu: microreflections = 24 dBc

I check for viruses and adware too many times to have any and NOD 32 keeps track of everything..
