Junior engineer has asked me to post this question.

For 6 months playing game sonline was great. However recently over the last 2 months the speed at which the internet games are being played has decreased. I normally have a ping of 50. But now it ranges from 50 to 600 and i cant play anymore. It is very annoying because at a cruicial moment my ping flys out of control. The server i play on is provided by Game Serve could you advise me how to get better pings

th'eng, getting serious stick of junior eng any help appreciated

If you use Firefox I suggest closing it.. it seems to be a real bandwidth hog in my experience.

But it could be any number of things causing it... anti-virus software, firewall software, p2p filesharing software (an obvious one really) and more or less anything that has access to the internet...

Also, it may be worthwhile playing with your proxy settings to an alternative .. especially if you've changed them in the past.

I have exhausted all PC configs have a few Pcs so not short of different configs.

Could we have a new bandwidth hog round here causing it we have had problems in this area on the datastreams recently

Quite possible.. although I've not got any inside NTL traffic analysis to back that up.... most recently the Doom3 leak has made quite an impact.

It's worth doing some traceroutes to see if there's any hop that is taking an especially long time.. it's not unknown for NTL to have a bad link in the chain.

Just wondered if it was possible for one of the NTL engineers on the forum to check out the local UBR for balance

I had this issue while playing BF1942 and SoF2. I had originally set my Linksys router not to allow OR reply to ping requests. I changed this to allow ping requests and have not had a problem since. Not sure why, but after hours of trying to configure the PC, this is what worked.

Which modem is it ???

Maybe lucky if your on a motorola and be able change your own UBR settings.

Wouldnt bother with changing proxies as they are predominantly for port 8080 web browsing traffic and wont improve your pings at all.

Trace Routes posted are the best way forward to check the obvious.

Rochdale uBR1 card 6 is quite lightly loaded right now and seems unlikely that load on it would jump from current levels to becoming an issue.

Can confirm what n00b says, th'eng's STB is online at 750k, upstream usage 27% (negligible), RF parameters that I can see look good. Nothing obviously stands out, in fact.

Does this happen with the relevant PC directly connected?

Complete traceroutes to relevant servers would help identify any bottlenecks.

Tom will get relevant junior engineer to complete some traceroutes thank you for checking.

Also have you checked for spyware and malware these can cause weird problems such as reporting stuff online causing lag and high ping

Check out adaware here :

http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button
Its free and updates and great for spyware

Also worth checking is spybot 1.3 this says in its usefull little notes that sometimes adaware finds its backup files and tries to remove them, have a read but in my notice of use i have no problems with these two working side by side and one seems to find problems left by the other. They work great together.

Hope this helps a bit I play Halo alot online and also one thing well worth checking is your disk defragmenter, as this can cause issues if not done regulary and well worth running if your on computer alot on games tends to help Halo run a little better :)

Have fun
