ah well i dont want to start an argument on this point by any means but i am officially welsh only by the fact that i was born in wales and my mother is welsh. however i do not speak welsh and my father is english and i do not in anyway wish to associate myself with the welsh nation.
i will as soon as my parents die be moving to england and be marrying someone from england.
i want to learn an english accent....preferably something like somebody living round the midlands....i want to talk the same as other english people so i am never associated with being welsh.

The person that started this thread had better be pulling my leg.
How sad is it that someone is vein enough to want to lose an accent they inherit, you have an accent because of where you brought up, it's disgusting thsat you would want to lose it.
Every accent sounds funny to someone with another accent, come on get it together for god sake.

Thing is, only the welsh create place names that are almost impossible to spell, and harder to visually ascertain how to pronounce.

Well if you really want to have an accent then you should move into my house. Boltonion with Mancunican and Scouse plus Irish and a sprinkling of Scottish means that we understand each other perfectly but no-one else does. Also the accents that we have in the house change every day and as I have a knack of picking up accents straight away I can speak at least 12 different regional accents a day. Try working closely with Maccums and Brummies and Cockneys who you have to speak to at least 25 times a day and thats before you start with nationwide customers.

Not what you wanted I know but reminded me of it
A young couple were driving through Wales. As they were approaching this village they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town's name. They argued back and forth until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter one asked the blonde employee, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are ... very slowly?"
The girl leaned over the counter and said, "Burrrrrrr, gerrrrrrr, Kiiiiiiiing

What is wrong with the Welsh Accent? I work with a Welsh Lady, and she manages to sound sexy with the accent.

Well, to give you a chance to be the resident expert: how do you tell the difference between a Canadian and an American speaker?
PS This is a serious question. It was done to death in the Grauniad Notes & Queries recently but, for the life of me, I can't recall any of the suggestions.

The thing that annoys me most about the welsh language is, if and when you go into a pub particulary in North Wales, they are speaking English when you first go in but they suddenly change to welsh when they know that you are English.

If the person that started this thread is serious then he should try looking in the local Yellow pages under Elocution since that is what the technical term is for what he is asking...

All i said was that they make all the difference in effective communication.... not that people couldn't communicate what they meant.
Anyway, body language actually contributes a higher percentage towards the communication process than tone and the words themselves....
Better to annoy someone in person that on the phone.... it takes less time and effort ;) :p

And I'm half Welsh! but sadly with London/Essex accent.
Can't think why anyone would want to get rid of a Welsh accent tho!
Lawrence Llewyllyn Bowen is also Welsh.......aww come on!! We gave you him but you gave us Graham Norton :grind:

I dont think anyone, welsh, northern, scottish whatever could ever consider the midlands accent normal. I come from Coventry and have got a bit of a slightest accent, it is actually quite embarrasing especially when other mates (not from midlands) here you say certain words.
I propose a petition to stop Stamp92 changing to a midlands accent, we might possibly save his life and career. ;)
Tom Jones....
Or is that a reason to NOT be associated with Wales :naughty:
The Stereophonics?
Loads of great welsh people out there... :)

Graham Norton is Irish, not English... Or was your comment directed toward the Irish people on this forum?
Edit: Russ, I think you got a better deal than we did.

stamp92, Elocution, that's the word:
Elocution (http://www.expatagency.com/index.htm?dailyneeds/elocution.htm~mainFrame)
When you say accent, I assume you mean standard pronunciation. A drama school might help.

and I thought I had Tinnitus - but now you point it out there is an echo:D
What fascinates me about accents is how they can change so much beween places quite close to each other. Russ has already pointed out that North & South Wales accents are different, as are North & South London. Also the Hull accent is totally different from the usual Yorkshire one, even though it's in Yorkshire. Scotland is the same - the Glasgow accent is unique & totally different to, say, Fife.
