Hi..... when you say knackered how u mean? cam belt snapped whilst driving kind of knackered? if so throw the engine away and fit a decent one from the breakers, the ford cvh engine is very good at clattering the top end when the belt snaps,so i would be very suprised if it hadnt done major damage, :( atb marc

not snapped just squeals for between half a mile and two miles when you start your engine and also squeals if you stop at traffic lights for too long and it keeps stalling for no reason.

Are you sure its the cam belt then? sounds more likely to be a fan belt slipping or the water pump on its way out a cam belt would 99% of the time either shed all the teeth and not go or completely fail and leave you with an engine that spins over but with no compression,i had a cam belt go on an escort i had and it just literally went ....no warning no noise nothin, atb marc

well it could be the fan belt.

i dont really know a right lot about cars.

the engine is pretty new has only done about 45k but the car has done about 190k

your best et is tp check the deflection on the visible belts ie see how much slack is on them it should be around 3-5mm i think* if theres any more play than that a new set of belts would more than likely solve your problem,if all else fails it could be as i said a waterpump on its way to the car parts heaven ....Marc

almost certainly the fan belt , sorry alternator drive belt as it will have an electric fan
maybe a tweak of the alternator will sort out the tension , if not a new belt will only be a couple of £'s and 10 minutes to fit ;)

They are pain to fit you have to do them from underneath the car

I had a similar problem on a Sierra Sapphy. Turned out it was the start of the alternator seizing.
About a week after it first happened the alternator completely seized, horrible burning smell and it was extremely hot too.

But as others said, check all belts for tightness and make sure that theres no visible signs of damge to them.

am taking it to the garage tomorrow to let a professional look at it. lucky for me they know me quite well there after the problems i had with my last car and so they usually have a peek for me at anything and do the jobs quite cheaply for me

Looks to me like the alternator.... if you fit a new alternator though make sure you fit a new alternator belt.... not worth reusing a part that only costs a couple of quid... may as well change it while you have the old one off....
