I live in Belfast and at the moment we have NTL digital TV set-top box/telephone. We use the NTLWORLD for Dial up to connect the internet on the computer.
We have the NTL digital TV set-top box in the sitting room where the tv is and the computer is in another room. Can you have NTL broadband in a different room as the computer is in an office as my father works from home he needs the computer in the office.
How do NTL install broadband.
Fergus Maunsell
The simple answer is yes, but how you get that broadband all depends on where about you are in the country. In some places you will be given a separate cable modem that hooks up to the coax that comes into your property. In others you will get you computer hooked up to the set top box. It really shouldn't make that much difference which way Ntl supply the service, you will be able to have it where ever you like :)
Hope that helps. As a side note, if you are interested in whether you will receive a separate modem or not if you post your location (nearest town will do) one of the more knowledgeable members will be able to help ;)
Don't know about the belfast area, but I should think that you may well be able to request a Cable Modem, which can then be installed wherever you wish (within reason).
If they do allow you a cable modem, I would advise that you use the ethernet connection rather than the USB, as this has proved troublesome in the past.
Just a side note:
Make sure the PC that is going to be connected to the broadband (which ever method you use) has some form of firewall installed, and the antivirus software is up to date.
The main reason for this is that, from experience, the number of port scans hitting your machine will increase on broadband, as most scanning is done across an IP range, and you will be connected for longer than you were on dialup.. ;)

Hi, and :welcome: Fergmaun!
Belfast is on what is called the "Langley" network, and as such, Broadband is supplied only through a Cable Modem (a little silver box). It sits next to your computer, and can be installed anywhere in your house you're willing to have a cable run to!

Whoohoo - This is definately the best way to go Fergmaun. :D
(oh and I forgot to say :welcome: to cf)
But seriously, the CM is the better option for BB (IMHO) - thanks for the confirmation Jimbo :tu:

I still haven't got NTL broadband yet.
Just one question is when NTL installed the cable from my street to under the grass to a grey box on the outside wall of the house and then to a white square box inside the house.
I see two cable conncections on the white box one for to concect to the set top box cable input.
What is the another connection on the white box for and can a cable be conneced to this for the cable modem.
Cheers

afaik that is a connector for FM radio .
to get the broadband installed the same cable that supplies tv to the set top box is split.

Fergmaun,
I'm a I/R Tech with NTL in Belfast,What area are you in?so i'll be able to give you a answer.Anyway, the are a number of ways,A CATV cable can be run from the grey box (ETB) externally to the PC.Where it comes in to the house round the back, another 'white box' (isolator) is fitted & a lead ran from that to the Stand Alone Cable Modem (SACM)
Another way is to split the incoming feed from the isolator in the front room (or the back of the Set Top Box (whichever is closer to the PC) & run a lead from there around to the PC.
Thirdly, there is the wireless option.NTL sell a 'actiontec' brand wireless router for £65 & install that at the time of the modem going in.The advantage of the wireless is no wires, you can move the PC around the home & you can connect more than one PC/Laptop to the Router. If you do get the ruoter, ask for a managed install, that way the tech installs the modem & router onto the pc.Normally,we dont install the modem software onto the pc unless you ask for it & there is a fee for that.(the fee for the router/modem install is included in the £65 as far as i know.)

has anyone got one of those grey boxes for outside the house? someone stole mine:mad:
Apart from this being a 4 year old thread - I would suggest you phone Virgin. They should be able to get it replaced
