View Full Version : Is NTL proxied?

Hi folks,

I'm currently working on a web site for a friend, but I'm having problems where the pages aren't updating properly.

I was wondering if NTL connections are behind a transparent proxy? The changes I'm making are reflected okay on a friends DSL connection but they show the old pages when I try it.

If my NTL connection is through a proxy, how long does it take for the proxy to go get the correct page rather than the cached page, and is there any way of forcing it not to load a cached page?

yes ntl is proxied

if you goto the page and press ctrl+F5 then it will update the page

if ctrl+ f5 doesn't work, type in the address with a ?1 at the end,

for example http://www.cableforum.co.uk/?1 would force the proxy to update.

If you do this however, you will have to use a sequence, ie the first time would be ?1 then ?2 then ?3 etc....

i also find hitting refresh a cople of times seems to make it load the updated page

MB, NTL's proxy's cause so much trouble for us and them, why do they keep them? Is it because they have bought them so they feel they may as well keep them? Or is it purely a cost cutting exercises, if so surely external bandwidth cant be that expensive now!

no idea :shrug: i am just a lowly tech support guy!!! if i was ntl's md i am sure they wouldn't have proxy servers... but i have some way to go before i get to that position!

i also find hitting refresh a cople of times seems to make it load the updated pagedamn thing isnt doing it this time i updated a bad link but still got a 404 however mates of mine on ADSL can load the link fine

its an internal link so no possiblity of server being down as im uploading to it and freinds can get the page.

anyway know how to force a refresh on ntls cache or to bypass teh damn thing completly

page is in a frameset so the url trick aint gonna work this time :shocked:

CTRL+F5.

If that fails specify a different proxy in IE.

I've found that adding an expiry date to the page helps it update newly updated pages more reliably - add the following HTML to the start of each page :

<head>
<meta http-equiv="expires" content="31 Dec 00">
