cable modem - switch from usb to ethernet

Does anyone know if there are a set of instructions for switching a cable modem currently connected and working through usb, to an ethernet port on the same machine?

It would normaly be a case of powering down both the pc and the modem. Disconecting the usb cable - connecting the ethernet cable and then powering up the modem. Once the modem has settled down power up the computer.
