View Full Version : Processor and mobo

Maybe someone here can answer this question: I have an asus a7v 266-e mobo. According to the asus website the fastest processor that I can run on it is an athlon xp 2600+ 266MHz fsb model 8.
The problem is that I can only find 333MHz fsb processors for sale online. Can I use the 333MHz on my mobo or not?

I dont think the processor would run at full speed, possibly not at all.
I'd stick with the Xp 2400 its the fastest 266 FSB chip out there now and pretty cheap too.

Why do you say that?

there was 266mhz FSB version of the 2600+ released but it was in small quantities. You could use a 333mhz version but it would clock at a lower speed unless you unlocked the multiplier. Its probably best to buy a 2400+ 266mhz FSB ;)

well from experience I tried to run an XP2000 on 100Mhz FSB it reported a 1200Mhz processor. I just forgot to set the Bios to 133.
I really dont know if processors are backwards compatible with FSB speeds, so seeing as the 2400 works on 266 then I simply suggest purchasing that CPU rather than the 2600.

Ok....is this: AMD ATHLON XP2400+ 266MHz FSB - Thoroughbred - OEM, the model 8 or the model 10, because the 8 will run on my mobo without a bios upgrade (which I would rather not do)

matty4donna

model 10 was the T'Bread with 9 layers wasn't it?

BTW doing an update on an Asus board is very easy - just use Asus Update software to do it. It flashes the EEPROM with no problems and is as easy as using IE. No fiddly floppy disks etc...

So it looks like the above quoted thoroughbred is a model 10?

If the model 8 runs on your board without upgrades then to make life simple thats what I would go for.
I do understand your confusion as my K7s5a Board allegedly supports the 2400 with bios version 3, I beleive my bios is version 1 and only supports the 2000. However I cannot confirm that the 2400 will not work.
Its a funny ol game isnt it?

hi timewarrior2001

I run a k7s5a 3.1 on a honey bios, which afaik will support a 2400, 138/166

- although mine is only a 2000 - & I run at standard 133, I have tried the "overclock" settings for memory & they do work with crucial 2700

Just to add my opinion, as someone said, go for the 2400+, you'd only be missing out theoretically on a .08 ghz speed difference with a 266mhz FSB from a 2600+.

and it's probably a bit cheaper:)
but that still leaves me with a problem: the 2400xp comes as a model 6 or a model 10. When I go looking, say on e-buyer, it dosn't say which model is the one for sale:confused:
I need a bios update for the model 10 but not for the 8:shrug:, so obviously the model 8 is the less risky option.

Sorry for butting in but I brought a Abit NF7 the other week with v2.0 and for the life of me I can't get it to update the BIOS. from the www.abit.tw.com site, there a file called nf17.exe that appears when u select your motherboard type and when I boot up with a floppy to use awdflash.exe it says it not compatible but it should be. Does anyone have any idea ? this the first time i had any trouble updating a mobo.

Sorry m8, no idea. Why don't you use mattys utility above?

Then get the ge-force fx 5900. That should last me a while. After that I will be getting a new machine completely (in a couple of years- having squeezed 4+ years out of this 'puter by that time).

that particular motherboard could have been sitting in stock at the retailer for months, they're hardly likely to update the bios before it leaves their warehouse.

I just got mattys application to work. It didn't want to connect from behind a firewall, as soon as I switched it off it connected and I now have the latest bios for my mobo (it was really easy and it did it all itself...and installed something called 'musikmatch jukebox' on my machine) Which I will be getting rid of as soon as I can figure out how to:mad:

lol that great but Abit doesn't have this flash feature which i used on Gigabyte mobo till the gigabyte one died. Abit still uses the "manual" method.

EDIT: They just released a new update on their website. Will be giving this a go tonight.

Musicmatch jukebox is a 10MB + download that you need ot register for. I doubt the flash util did that.

ECS users can get the latest "overclocking bios" from OCworkbench http://forum.ocworkbench.com/ocwbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=27

You 'could' then simply up the FSB speed to 166mhz either from the bios or by using a tool like this

http://www.podien.onlinehome.de/CPUFSB.HTM

Alternatively you could just put your ECS boards in their rightful place, the dustbin ;)
