Hello Flip

You might get a little more help if you PM JustAnotherNoob he can run some tests and perhaps give the right people a kick into action.

He is good at helping and has found things wrong with mine before now...

We need a bit more info about the problem you are having (with your connection-not with ntl!)

Let's deal with the connection problem, then we can help you deal with ntl ;)

UPDATE

Tech: hello you have uber leechers on ya line...this was first reported 6 months ago...

Me: I know...

Tech: Nothing we can do..it's down to local action team (or summat)

Me: K

24 hours later my phone rings...

CS: (customer services)... you want to complain bout ntl?

Me: No

CS: Ummm says here you do....grrrr sound (made that bit up...hehe!)

CS: I'm sending tech out to you...(sounded threatening lol)

Me:K

Engineer: (8am sat) nothing wrong with your connection..

Me: Yup 8am sat all is hoohah!

Engineer: see ya...btw...complain to ntl...I'm on half price one meg and it sucks...big time...why at 6pm every night my connection is shiat...write to 'em man...c 'ya...

Me...Lordy I'm lost....:Yikes:

So my point in all this - btw can't seem to rid the italics....if ntl know my connection is uberleeched...the engineer is uberleeched...how come that's it?

I'm all for the cap as the souls on here put it...but come on...why should 34.99 become the equivalent of dial up at least 2 or three time per day?

Call me old fashioned but I think we shoudl be told....and to recap my line is UNDER subscribed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HeHe!

Thanks for your help guys..and paul666 sorry for the wrong pm ...:dunce:

As an update...rang tech this pm (about 4) in game pings were 250 in uk servers...browsing awful...tech guy offered me new proxies inc ahem manchester and nottingham (i thought that was funny...)...though he admitted it wouldn't help ma ping...

he also had me do a robin walker speed test:

512
952
950
650

that's on 1mb....:Yikes:

He said he would put this to a "level three" - is this like a Defcon alert status or summat? ;)

paulyoung666
18-04-2004, 23:05

the levels reflect the techs experience and skill; every 6months there are test for career progression. you start at level 1, and i think level 3 is as high as it goes, i have heard that there are a couple of level 4s floating around somewhere but i have never heard of them and never seen one either!!

Hi Flip

you could have dunkeh syndrome like me.. Told you to pm JustAnotherNoob he would have run some tests on your connection.. He knows what is the problem and can get someone out to check things but like me it takes time and you have to be patient...

I have high pings causing my son to no longer play his online CS he used to have very low pings now he is in the 200 to 300 and that was on 1mb. I have seen customers with lower pings on 600K.

our pings are crap...FACT...ntl bully boy tech rugby players wanna argue that based on a SNAPSHOT of 10 mins in a day when its been crap...fine...thanks for nothing.

sorry guys but ntl are NOT giving us a 24/7 service.

to say @sorrry@ nasty people are on your line is NOT good enough...

I said once before ...I ask for a PINT in a pub and pay for it...I don't get a half 'cos they are too @busy@...they wanna be players in the BB land...then act like it...not spoilt kids who say its our fault....whn it truly isn't.

Flip, i did pm you with an explanation of the problem, and the probably timescale that it would be resolved in. Did you get it and read it?

IMO there is nothing that can be done in the mean time, stress and swear all you like, but to be honest i don't think it is actually make any difference, and it certainly isn't going to make anyone at ntl keen to help you.

as for formatting i wrote in a much earlier thread - three weeks ago i thin -we formatted and life was great - i even used the no ntl cd advice on this forum...life was brilliant...for 5 days...

now please listen to me...i have spent more time on spyware/trojan and virsu forums in the last six months i do know what im on about...i am free of crap.

4th 128K took 2797 ms = 46862 Bytes/sec = approx 390 kbits/secSome extra things to check:

1. You were presumably using an explicit proxy setting during this test (to judge by the Hijack output in your later post), so it would be better evidence to gather a set of these test results using a selection of differing proxies from around the country, and also your default transparent proxy. Otherwise, it could have been one proxy having a busy time. If they are all poor, then this would point to something other than a bad proxy.

2. It would be worth checking the Advanced Properties of your ethernet card, and configuring it to a fixed half-duplex setting (rather than allowing it to auto-negotiate), just to eliminate the possibility that you might be having duplex mismatch problems between your PC and the cable modem or STB.

Salu
20-04-2004, 13:32
Also make sure that if you are using an Ethernet connection (as opposed to USB) that your drivers are uptodate. I had a similar problem with a Realtek 8139 (i think) that was cured by the latest drivers...in XP.

That's not using a proxy given to me by tech...but the birmingham one I have automatically...

I shall of course take a couple more snapshots using various proxies...though with the greatest respect, no matter how fast my proxy I will not get the proper in game pings.

We have just adaware6'd / spybot search and destroyed manual scanned for viruses uing our trend uptodate software.... also scanned using rav online (excellent) ... also housecall...you could say this is getting boring for you guys...sorry bout that...and apologies to tech for getting angry...a mix of bad day and samo samo from son just flipped me over the edge.

slightly better....but no help for online gaming...

as for the duplex settings...it was down to your fantastic site rdhw that I have been able to hold my own with tech (mostly) I have followed your advice to the letter....it just seems this last couple of months things have gotten far worse.

btw...i have rolled back my realtek driver and installed the up to date one...a few time believe me!

I still don't like having my sacm attached to my set top box...for some reason they are loathe to give me what i see as a proper connection...:pp

I have taken the no swearing at ntl oath and will abide by that.

I shall take a few snapshots and then send it all to head office...thanks for the address btw...

I still don't like having my sacm attached to my set top box.You have the 1Mbps service through an STB?? Hmmmm.... Or do you mean that you have an SACM (stand-alone cable modem, not STB) which is wired rather close beside your STB?

Some franchise areas offer an SACM for the 1Mbps service, if requested. Are you in one of those areas?

Have you ever had your PC checked out for network settings such as RWIN and MTU? You might like to try the Tweak Test at http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweaks and then post the URL of the results page here. When it asks for the connection type, say "normal".

Paul
20-04-2004, 18:04
Just one small point - these tests via different proxy servers will not indicate how online gaming will perform - as gaming does not involve the use of the proxy servers.

Flip
20-04-2004, 18:59
Just to clear it up.

I have 1mb connection.

It comes from green box outside my house (25yrds away) goes into my set top box....then into the next room to a cable modem.

In other words sacm is connected via the stb...I've never been happy with that arrangement though numerous techs have said it's fine.

who am I to argue? :disturbd: :D

All I know is you can see from the above readings that pinging to a game server is an impossibility...

speed of d/load or how quick i get to google isn't my major problem - though obviously paying for that you expect it!

my problem as I keep saying is my sons ability at online gaming - UK player - he has NOT been able to play online with a decent ping for weeks.

His obvious distress affects me and certainly my judgement when I'm trying to reason with certain techs who seem to treat me liek an imbecile...no excuse for losing my rag last night I know...but this is affecting my sanity and the harmony of my family.

we eat sleep and drink bloody pings and if I wasn't a dad who gave a hoot (no swearing!) I doubt I'd get so passionate about this.

I say again...how can ntl practically ignore/dismiss that the service they are providing to very many people is abismal and pretty close to breach of contract....

Does it get worse each evening ?

If it does then, to me, it suggests a bit of oversubscription on the UBR.

The PM that i sent to Flip, confirmed that UBR channel utilisation is very high, 85% to be precise, so this is the source of the problem.

I have spoken to the appropriate people about this, so it will be sorted out when they do weekly maintenance on the UBR. As i explained to Flip i don't know when this will be, so advised him to check the planned maintenance on the server status page.

I don't know why Flip is continuing this thread, he knows that the problem is, and knows what is going to be done about it. In the mean time, no amount of messing around with his pc/ network card/ modem etc is actually going to make any difference.

Flip, please give ntl an opportunity to do something about this, i know that it has been going on for a while, but i just ask for a little more patience and it should get sorted!

Thanks MB - all is now clear.

Flip - the problem has been diagnosed and the solution is in hand - might I suggest that you stop keep posting about it and now give NTL time to action the fix in the next planned slot. :)

Flip-you need to escalate this as far as you can in ntl, as clearly they won't listen otherwise.

Do you want me to give you a name/number for someone?

Paul gave me one but I have no response as yet - hehe only 48 hours...:pp

Man this has totally brought me down...as for son well as I'm dad I'm the big bad guy in the house...even my wife has started asking her friends about pings....jeez...why is all this so dammned stressful...:Yikes: ;)

I'm poretty sure tech must have me on a bad list or summat...someone tell em i won't shout this time.....pleeeeaaassseeeee

PS: Just rang tech and spoke to TONY - can I say for the first time I've spoken to someone who is a gentleman and honest...his explanation and his apparent anger at fault team made the grim realisation that NTL HAVE NO PLAN TO COMBAT MY AREAS PROBLEM... slightly easier to swallow.

For the record this is a scandal...an absolute disgraceful scandal..

Ofcom, watchdog any consumer mag listening....in a former life I was a journalist...man i feel a few stories coming on.
