(LOL, seems like Zone Alarm wasn't the only thing to have an update posted today.)

I went on Windows Update earlier, & there were *5* new Critical Updates - all posted today (13/04/04).

One for Outlook Express: "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)"

One for Internet Explorer: "Critical Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB831167)"

And three for Windows XP: "Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732)", "Security Update for Windows XP (KB828741)" and "Security Update for Windows XP (KB837001)"

The usual critical "...this could allow a remote user to gain control of your computer". (or "whoops, we've found more holes/flaws...")

My machine's automatic updates has just flagged up three critical updates for Win 2000, which it is now downloading. Appears to be going very slowly indeed tho.

At the moment, if I try to use windows update, sometimes it reports a 'network fault' but usually IE just locks up so I have to ctrl-alt-del out of it!

K I give up. Just tried it again and got this,

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/shared/images/info_icon.gifWindows Update Error

Windows Update has encountered an error. This may be due to a discrepancy in your computer's time setting.

To check your date and time setting:

On the taskbar, double-click the time.
Verify that the date and time is correct.

The time on my machine is correct too

Our Mission:

Through the innovative use of Microsoft software, Microsoft.com provides a global exchange of ideas, knowledge, and technology that helps people incorporate the full value of technology into their lives and businesses.

Microsoft.com Overview:

When www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com/) started in 1994, the entire site was hosted on a single server that handled about a million hits a day. As the Internet expanded, more and more groups at Microsoft began adding content to the Web site. Today, more than 500 writers and developers working in more than 70 locations around the world provide information for the Microsoft Web site. Three data centers manage our online traffic. Within those data centers, 60 servers host general Web content, 11 servers host SQL, 50 servers respond to site searches, 49 servers handle download requests (along with thousands of global caching servers), and 10 servers host FTP content.

Here are just a few statistics about our Web site. (Figures are rounded and are not exact.)

Traffic (for February 2004)

135 million unique users per month
4.6 million unique users per day
949 million page views per month
32.7 million page views per day
Content

110 GB of content
3.2 million files total

1.4 million HTML, ASP, and ASPX files
1.2 million GIF or JPG image files

Approximately 690 GB of files available for download (with a monthly growth of 25 GB)
Content created around the clock. Approximately 5 GB of new and updated content published daily.
More than 1100 databases support an average of 600 concurrent connections during peak business hours
Network/Hardware

Six dedicated gigE uplinks provide a total of 6000 MB uplink capacity.
Multiple OC48s provide connectivity to the Internet.
Running on HP Proliant ML570 with four PIII-Xeon/700 Mhz processors, 4 GB memory, 170 GB content capacity, and 34 GB log capacity each.
Software

The Web servers (IIS 6.0) run on Windows Server 2003.
The search servers receive 149 requests per second and run on a multi-layer architecture that includes SharePoint Server.
The database servers run Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition.
International Scope
Microsoft's worldwide subsidiaries (http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/) are a strong presence on www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com/). Seventy-six international sites provide value-added content, as well as core Microsoft corporate and product information for local market customers.

I have XP Pro with SP1 installed too, however I have had many updates installed since I installed it last year.
Perhaps its a problem with your update configuration?

As for the site running slow it was) perhaps thats because lots of people are getting updated.

I'm all updated now, till the next one comes out...

I have a persistent problem on one of my home network machines in that Windows Update REFUSES to accept that I am an administrator and so have authority to download/ initiate updates. I have been through all of the Windows Update help routines with no success.

That posed a problem in the case of critical updates (as recently). Someone (Xaccers I think) told me to simply go to www.microsoft.com, select downloads and then to do the update downloads manually. IT WORKS! Try it.
