Did anyone see Watchdog on TV this week?

There have been a spate of diallers working thier wicked magic on people, one woman had a bill of over £1000 for 59 second calls at £1.50 PM on her NTL line.

NTL have a info page (http://www.ntlworld.com/help/aup/alert_trojan.php) about it.

Although this will not affect those of us that are on broadband, unless you have a modem in your PC & its left switched on & insufficient AV protection.

Although you have to sympathise with the poor sods that had this happen to them, I also get to thinking why did they not have an upto date AV program?
(they do pick them up dont they?).

It's more spyware related, than A/V, so A/V software rarely picks it up I'm afraid.

The NTL site recommends firewall as a way of stopping it.

It was on Watchdog again this week, more people getting big bills because of it.

It is reccomended that when your not using your PC, and if you leave it turned on, unplug the modem.

I'm glad that I no longer need one in my PC.

Did she have to cough up?

They have not mentioned that she has not had to.
There has been talk of increasing standing orders etc until the ICSTIS have investigated etc.

Its a disgusting way of making money from people, infect thier PC's & then make them dial up.
The only people who profit from this are the original company & the phone company. IMO they should accept some responsiblilty for allowing the company to use thier network for these premium rate lines & waver any charges.

Don't NTL have any system to check if customers phone charges suddenly go through the roof or any limit that triggers an alert to check with the customer. If not, why not?

Can NTL ban these premium rate numbers for customer that wish this and if yes do they charge for it to be done ?

banning ALL premium rate numbers would be a start.
With the ability for a user to contact one using a PIN etc perhaps.
