Virgin and Sky slug it out at broadband gong bun fight

# 24 January 2014, 10:53 by Chris T

Virgin Media scooped a hat trick of gongs at last night’s uSwitch Broadband Awards.

The ISP lifted the trophies for Best Broadband Provider, Best Customer Rated Broadband, and Fastest Broadband at the glittering corporate bun fight sponsored by uSwitch, a UK-based price comparison website.

It’s the second year running that VM has taken the Best Broadband Provider award. But despite that success, uSwitch handed VM’s arch-rival Sky the prizes for Best TV Provider; Best Broadband, TV & Home Phone; Best TV Streaming Service and Best Customer Benefits, making it a 4-3 victory to Sky on the night.

There were consolation prizes for BT (Best Broadband Innovation, for BT Sport) and Plusnet (Best Customer Service and Best Value Home Broadband). Meanwhile EE’s nine-month head start on the roll-out of 4G mobile services made it a shoo-in for the Fastest Mobile Broadband award.

Even so, uSwitch’s own surveys suggest EE 4G, despite launch publicity claims of 8-12Mbs average download speeds, has over the last 12 months managed only 5.1Mbps, on average.

A uSwitch spokeswoman said: “Virgin Media and Sky may have come away triumphant, suggesting their customers are the most content, but British broadband – though considered the fourth utility – is by no means perfect with speed, service and cost still top concerns for bill-payers.

“As providers battle ever more fiercely for a bigger bite of the market, and find new ways of setting themselves apart, Brits can take advantage of lower-priced deals, more competitive perks and higher quality service. “
