VM prepares to launch "augmented reality" mobile app

# 20 June 2012, 10:50 by Chris T

Virgin Media plans to release an ‘augmented reality’ app for mobile phones next month, following an earlier experiment with the technology in January.

Available for iOS and Android devices, the app is designed to help subscribers “get the most from their Virgin Media package and discover more of the things they love,” according to Natasha Conetta, the company’s head of customer communications.

There are no details yet as to exactly how the app will do this. January’s foray into the world of AR included a video introduction to the company’s customer magazine by Richard Branson, movie trailers and the ability to make a 3D model of the Eiffel Tower explode.

“The addition of AR functionality will make engagement with our brand simpler, more fun, and more immersive, and this app opens up the possibility of the tech being used in all of our direct marketing channels,” Conetta added.
