ntl confirms the worst estimate of job losses

# 9 May 2006, 12:11 by Chris T

SIX THOUSAND ntl staff will lose their jobs or face having their employment transferred to another company, as the cableco tries to save £250 million a year following its takeover of Telewest.

So far ntl has confimed that 1,500 call centre staff in Liverpool and Swansea will be transferred to IBM, which already handles some of these duties. 54 staff from Teeside will also be transferred.

Another 4,500 people will either face redundancy or another bout of outsourcing. ntl says it cannot provide any further details for the time being, although it predicts that many of the actual job losses can be achieved through natural wastage, voluntary redundancy and cuts in the number of temporary staff.

ntl has defended the move by pointing out that it has consistently warned ‘headcount reductions’ were likely following any deal with Telewest.

In a statement issued today, it says the cuts will lead to “a better experience for our customers in the long term.”

• At a presentation of its First Quarter trading figures this morning, ntl said it had made an operating profit of £4 million, and added 25,800 subscribers.
