Network routing for printing
Hi again,
previously, we had a small home network - all upstairs, with a Belkin wireless router (F5D-7230-4) connected to the NTL (Virgin Media) cable modem.
An XP desktop (DT1) and an HP1300N (network) printer were wired (ethernet) to the router and a Dell laptop (XP) and a Nokia 770 tablet (Linux) connected wirelessly from (almost) anywhere in the house. A second XP desktop (DT2) was linked to the router using homeplugs, internet access and printing were fine.
Following lots of problems with VM, mainly with the set top boxes and the V+ system, we changed broadband supplier from cable modem with Virgin Media to ADSL broadband through BT with Sky.
The Sky router (wireless NetGear DG834GT) is downstairs beside the main BT socket for the ADSL connection. The laptop and tablet are fine and connect to the Netgear wireless router for internet access. DT1 and the HP1300N are wired (ethernet) to the Belkin router which is WAN-connected to the Netgear by homeplug and internet access and printing are fine. There are now 2 laptops - the Dell runs XP and the HP Pavilion runs Vista - and these can access the printer by switching them over to the Belkin wireless router - this is a bit fiddly but OK for occasional printing.
However, DT2 which is now connected to the Netgear router by homeplug for internet access, will not connect to the printer or to the Belkin router. I guess DT2 is not attached to the Belkin LAN - any ideas ?
