Flashing WRT54G Firmware

I'm picking up a Linksys WRT54G after work, and I'm very tempted to flash the firmware provided it's a fairly old model (getting it from PC World cause it's cheaper than everywhere else but they don't do the WRT54GL sadly )

Anyway, assuming that it's not the latest version I get, which firmware do people recommend using? I won't go with Sveasoft, as I don't agree with them charging $20 p/year for something that should really be free under the GPL. Should I go with dd-wrt, openwrt, tomato, etc...?

Anyone with any thoughts? TIA

Re: Flashing WRT54G Firmware

Even if you get a V5 or 5.1 DD-WRT Micro will still work on it I'm using it now in that particular setup (V5.1 with DD-WRT V23 SP2) works like a charm, except i find with my heavy usage i had to set it up to reboot itself at 5am everyday (can be set for any time, or however many minutes you like)

Also, you should look at other routers that DD-WRT supports, things like the Buffalo models are now supported. (link: http://www.dd-wrt.com/shop/catalog/index.php?cPath=1_21)
Also, if you really need specialist bandwidth restriction etc there is a special version of DD-WRT with this built in, however it will cost you a few bob (20 Euros)

EDIT: And if you need to boost the signal distance, how about some free and cheap to make antennas? http://www.freeantennas.com/

EDIT2: For later versions, see this post here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=53085

Re: Flashing WRT54G Firmware

Rats... just got it home and it's a v7. Dilemma - should I return it and get a WRT54GL online, or should I just stick with this one?

Re: Flashing WRT54G Firmware

Version 7?

Scrap it, order the WRT54GL online, or one of the Bufalo routers

Re: Flashing WRT54G Firmware

Yeah. Had to be done... just ordered the 54GL from overclockers, should arrive on Friday. Now just need to get shot of this 54G. Luckily I got it for a good price - only £35.

Re: Flashing WRT54G Firmware

Well done I want one for myself... Just to mess around with

That's a cheap WRT54G mind, but they're getting cheaper because they are so crap The V7 is apparantly so cut down they're not even going to support it officially in some firmwares.
