Rupert Murdoch set to sell off 21st Century Fox assets to Disney

https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...sets-to-disney

This includes their 39% share of Sky so Disney will now because the biggest shareholder of Sky and the take over bid from Fox is now less of a concern.

Sounds like a bit of a micky mouse organisation to me.

Don't get what all the fuss is about. The vast majority of Sky's broadcast content is created by others, including the BBC, ITV etc.

Re: Comcast (Universal, NBC) looks at Fox merger

Deal just announced.....

---------- Post added at 12:07 ---------- Previous post was at 12:03 ----------

Disney to buy Fox in $52.4bn deal including Murdoch's Sky share.

Deal also includes Fox's studio, and FX channel and Star TV.

No news yet on whether a Murdoch will become the top dog at Disney. The Murdoch's will become Disney's largest shareholder with a 25% share and likely James Murdoch will become the new Disney CEO in the future.

Disney/Fox investor teleconference in a hour.

Disney buys 20th Century Fox movies and tv series

Just came across this article on Sky News

Quote:
Disney has agreed a $52bn deal to buy film and TV assets from 21st Century Fox.

The sale includes Fox's 39% stake in Sky, the owner of Sky News.

In the US, the widely-anticipated deal will bring together the 20th Century Fox film studio known for hits such as Avatar and Ice Age with Disney's film assets including Pixar, Marvel and LucasFilm's Star Wars franchise.

Also included in the deal are Fox's US cable networks including FX and the National Geographic Channel as well as India's Star TV.

Other assets changing hands include Fox's 30% stake in Hulu, the US streaming service, in which Disney is also a shareholder.
It is very interesting but I am scratching my head and wondering why Fox are doing it. My knowledge is limited but I can only think it leaves them in the news business and that is it.
It is good news for us anyway because 20th Century Fox have the rights to X-men and the original Star Wars films so with Disney buying them it now puts more Marvel stuff under one umbrella with Disney and Marvel.

More importantly

Now that Disney is going to own the rights to all the Star Wars movies hopefully we'll have a massive movie marathon at the cinema at some point and before Episode IX comes out we'll do IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII in one day.

Erm, there are just a few anti-trust, anti-competition hurdles to overcome before any of this happens so who knows

Re: Comcast (Universal, NBC) looks at Fox merger

According to the BBC Disney are also buying Fox's stake in Sky

"The deal includes Fox's 39% stake in satellite broadcaster Sky, and the 20th Century Fox film studio, Disney announced."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-42353545

However it then says in the same article....

"Fox's proposed deal to buy the remainder of Sky is being already investigated by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which is due to publish provisional findings in January.

The BBC understands that the Disney deal will not alter that investigation."

So let me get this straight....

Disney are buying 39% of Sky from Fox. But Fox still want to buy all of Sky? So they'll sell part and then try to buy 100%? That makes no sense?

Is it just me being thick but i cant wrap my head around that whatsoever.

Re: Rupert Murdoch set to sell off 21st Century Fox assets to Disney

I assume they're going ahead with the investigation whilst they await for the deal to be done. Maybe Disney will inherit the process of buying 100% of Sky.

One of the concerns over the Sky deal was the Murdochs owning both Sky News and News International (The Sun, The Times). That's obviously gone.

Number 4 (part of):

Quote:
Disney’s takeover of Fox, which could take months to gain clearance in the US, will not impact the CMA continuing its investigation. Until the Disney deal gets shareholder and regulator go-ahead, the CMA must still act as if Murdoch is buying Sky.

Either way, if Disney ultimately inherits the Sky stake after the CMA has blocked the deal currently being pursued by the Murdochs, Disney can simply use the 39% shareholding to launch another full bid for Sky.

For the short term, yes, but what is Murdoch's long term plan here?

He has spent his entire life building these companies up from scratch. Will he really be satisfied with just the possibility (and at this point it is only a possibility) that one of his sons may become a future Disney boss? I don't think so.

As I said in another thread, mice and tigers don't mix, tigers win always. Don't be surprised if somehow, no idea how, that Disney becomes Murdoch's company in the end.

Money. Murdock can't afford Disney anyway and even if one of his son's does raise up the ranks they're beholden to shareholders.

It allows Rupert to spend more time with Jerry Hall and less time with directors and analysts.
