Re: Plane Spotters Corner
Impressive stuff - no doubt that sort of manoeuvrability has been under top secret development for years and years ... and no doubt it's given rise to more than one or two 'UFO' sightings.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner
Couldn't believe this story about the NAO report into Eurofighter Typhoon procurement:
Quote:
Probably the most dismal figure we are given is that the RAF will actually put into service just 107 Typhoons. At the moment it has received 70: the last of the 160 planes ordered by the UK will be delivered in 2015. But, we are told, "by 2019" all the Tranche 1 jets (which were still being delivered to the RAF at the start of 2008) will be "retired" – that is, thrown away. We'll pay for 160 jets (actually we'll pay for 232), but we'll only ever get a fleet of 107.

More wreckage from AF-447 has been found. Lets hope they can finally find the black boxes and put this to bed once and for all.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner
Some of you are bound to have heard about the incident this weekend in which a Southwest airlines (Flight 812) had a rapid de-pressurisation of the cabin after a part of the ceiling flew off and left a hole in the cabin fuselage.
This got me thinking about the stress these airlines put on their planes on a daily bassis.
Often these low cost carriers are making several trips per day, each time putting stress on the planes fueselage.
With some UK airlines still running 737 300 and 500 series aircraft put into service in the 90's, we are ending up with planes that are now over 20 years old.
With frequent flights on a daily bassis how long before these planes are so used that something goes wrong. Its time that some companies update their aircraft.

Having worked in aviation, I know that the average jet flys passengers for 15-20 years, and flys 100s of thousands of cycles and have regular checks.
When thay have a 'C check' (majot MOT check) every panel that can be removed is, often paint is removed and eddy currents are used to find cracks. This check takes about a month.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner
Looks like we might get some answers over the Air France 447 flight from Rio to Paris.
Wreckage has been found. Hopefully the data recorders will give some vital info.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner
Saw a Typhoon over Loch Lomond this afternoon - came south, executed a tight turn to starboard whilst losing altitude and then tore off northwards again.
I've never seen a Typhoon here before. We get the occasional Herc and a few Tornados but they always seem to be on the way somewhere else. I got the impression this one was limbering up for a trip to Libya ...
