Start with your Irish ancestors. Tracing them doesn't need to be as difficult as you think depending on how far back they came over and providing you know which townland they were from.

Most of the census returns before 1901 were destroyed by fire at the Four Courts in 1922 but the civil registration records and many of the parish registers (particularly the RC ones) that were deposited there survived.
