The modem will only support a single connection direct to it, i.e. ethernet or USB, not both simultaneously. When swapping over you'd need to disconnect (at the modem) the redundant lead, and repower the modem.
You could use Internet Connection Sharing between the two computers, using the USB (or a second network card) to provide the connection between the main computer and modem. However that needs your main PC to be on whenever the second PC needs to be used for internet.
Most people are finding that, unless the second PC's internet use is infrequent, a router is preferred.
