Why can't the contents of these cabinets be put underground?

No, but then I wouldn't put it in a 6' x 6' box outside someone's window.:)

A hole in the ground can be waterproofed can't it?

How do you plan on putting line cards into said hole, carrying out any maintenance or explaining to Ofcom why people have no phone service for weeks if the seal fails? :)

Putting that beast underground on a street would be a massive undertaking. It would require a huge excavation, the moving of all other utilities, water, gas, electricity, BT, it'd be a nightmare.

The only option would be to literally do a BT and put one above ground but in a building. Unlike BT though this would have to be done for every 500 premises served.

Maybe it's more difficult to curtain-twitch, with an MSAN for a window.

Yes how unreasonable for them to want a little light in their flat, selfish old gits

Blimey, let's get it into perspective, the cabinets are not pretty but it's hardly a block of flats rendering their flat pitch dark. There's a hedge behind about half of it so unless they were planning to keep that hedge the same size/thickness then the amount of light they've lost because of the cabinets is pretty small and will reduce as the hedge grows and hides it. Without knowing what the other installation options were it's hard to say whether much more could have been done to site the box in a less obtrusive place. Nobody is going to want one right outside their home and of course for it to suddenly appear is going to be a bit of a shock to these people so I do have some sympathy.

Its bang outside their window and far too high made worse as the foot path is higher than where the house is built, so i think it is out of order putting it there, so for the people saying they see no problem with it, would those people like it right outside their patio window? I think not....

There's clearly a problem with it, the scale of the problem is the issue and these cabinets obscure a view a couple of feet higher and wider than the existing hedge does.

Probably blighted the property value by a few thousand too.

That nice bit of warm light coming between the buildings opposite they will no longer get. Probably cost them a few quid a year on heating bills for something so simple.

But most of all, who wants to look out of their window on to that HUGE cabinet, made worse by the low windows and position of the property to begin with. One gets the feeling this was not considered at all in the process of choosing a position.

It'd be funny if it were like in the old ondigital days and they were to close to get a signal :D
