Australian police have arrested two people after a car drove into a crowd in Melbourne.

The car "collided with a number of pedestrians" on Flinders Street, a busy junction in the centre of the city, said Victoria Police.

Fourteen people have been injured, with several in a critical condition.

Police have said it was a deliberate act but said it was too early to say whether it was terrorist-related.

The driver and another man have been detained.

"The motivations are unknown," police commander Russell Barrett said.
My lad, who is in Melbourne, rang us at 7am this morning to let us he was safe, as he knew we would be concerned.

Australian police say the man who deliberately drove a car into a crowd in Melbourne is an Australian citizen of Afghan descent.

They say he is known to police but there is no evidence of terrorism links.

The car "collided with a number of pedestrians" on Flinders Street, a busy junction in the centre of the city, said Victoria Police.

Fourteen people have been injured, with several in a critical condition.

Police said the driver, 32, has a history of drug abuse and mental health problems.

The second man, 24, was arrested after being seen filming the incident. He had a bag of knives on him, they added.
