Brought back memories of ‘Exercise Rocking Horse’ in West Berlin - that was simulating war breaking out.
Only challenge we had was that the Russians were closer to the armoury than we were in Married Quarters (with a wire fence at the edge of the Gatow airfield the only barrier in the way) - our life expectancy was less than an hour. It was quite common to hear of West Berliners committing suicide when the Exercises were held, as they thought the Soviets were coming back, and they remembered their previous incursions. |

Rather a false alert than no alert at all. Although there are some that would rather disappear in a flash rather than have a few minutes to worry.

I don’t believe anyone would rather be vapourised than have a false alert - I lived near Greenham Common in 84-85, and we were woken up by the attack alarm (rather than the practice alert alarm) went off at around 3am one morning - we wouldn’t have had to worry about the fallout, we would have been the fallout; we were very relieved when the all-clear siren went off very soon after. |

On the other hand, the evacuation plan was that in the event of a potential conflict, we (Sigint trade) would be the first ones shipped back to the U.K. as we could continue doing our job there - luckily, our job was to know if we were going to be attacked, which was fortuitous... |
