Work from home to avoid volcanic disruption, says VM Business

# 1 June 2011, 06:19 by Chris T

Virgin Media Business is calling on UK companies to invest in cloud computing systems as a fresh volcanic eruption in Iceland rekindles memories of stranded travellers and grounded planes.

With the Grímsvötn volcano spewing clouds of ash high into the skies, prompting flight diversions and cancellations across Scotland and the North of England, the cableco’s business arm believes it’s time for serious investment in remote working solutions.

Alistair McKinnon, senior product manager of IP multimedia at Virgin Media Business, has warned that businesses need to think carefully about what contingency plans they have in place to deal with such unforeseen events.

The inability to travel can have a direct and considerable impact on a business’ bottom line, he said.

“Yet this can often be avoided by embracing remote collaboration tools, such as videoconferencing, teleconferencing and desktop sharing, which allow workers to meet up virtually.”
